BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2017 Due to publishing agreements, the 2017 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2017 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2016 Coming into 2015, Gomes was every team's dream: an above-average catcher on both sides of the ball, with a contract that paid him just $22 million over the next six seasons. But seven games into his season, Gomes wrecked his MCL on a play at the plate; his body returned to the team at the end of May, but the bat didn't recover until... July, when he returned to league-average production for his position? Or maybe September, when his slugging finally returned to 2014 levels? Eventually he got there, at least. Though his whiff percentage didn't change much in the aggregate, he was swinging and missing on fastballs 14 percent of the time, which is a large tick up from his 2014 Silver Slugger season. Breaking pitches tend to put his bat to rest, so he'll need to go back to feasting on hard stuff in order to reclaim his position as one of the best catchers (and bargains) in the league.
2015 Formerly one of the best-kept secrets in the American League, Gomes is now firmly on the radar following a full season of across-the-board contributions. He doesn't walk much, but his bat-to-ball skills and burgeoning power are valuable traits, especially for a backstop, especially one who can hold his own with the glove and control the running game. He went through a defensive lapse at the beginning of the season, but work with Sandy Alomar Jr. corrected the issue; Gomes also receives plus marks for his pitch-framing abilities. He brings balance to a left-leaning lineup that struggled against southpaws in 2014 and the six-year pact he signed prior to the 2014 campaign is already looking like a steal at just $23 million.
2014 Gomes' career before 2013 could be used in a spy textbook on becoming anonymous. Avoid rookie attention? Sure, just spend too many days on the roster so you'll be ROY ineligible. (This is important so people don't go looking at your great Triple-A statistics.) Avoid attention for being an offensive contributor at a light-hitting position such as catcher? Check: Play several other positions as well, suggesting defensive liabilities. Avoid national attention? Try to get traded in November to a smaller-market team not expected to compete. For good measure, hitting .204 in a limited trial before the trade should complete the “stealth” outfitting. Make no mistake, “Yanimal” is for real, and a big part of the second-half surge by the Tribe. While he's unlikely to hit for such a high batting average again, and getting on base won't ever be a strong suit, he has enough catch-and-throw (and game calling) skills to start at catcher, and enough ISO to be welcome in any lineup.
2013 Gomes came to Cleveland in November, along with Aviles, in a deal that sent reliever Esmil Rogers to Toronto. Gomes’s chief virtue is his ability to play multiple positions, albeit none of them very well. He’s a below-average hitter with above-average pop and a mild traditional batting split that favors left-handed pitching.
2011 Although frightened Floridians might have mistaken him for an unholy union of Esteban Yan and Jonny Gomes sent to remind Rays fans of the lean years, Yan Gomes is a 10th-round pick from 2009 who put up big numbers in the Florida State League, including 21 doubles in 247 plate appearances. He'll need to acquire a walk rate worthy of Gomes (or even better, Yan) if he is to rise further.

2016-04-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)Gomes is my C but Grandal and D'Arnaud both available. 14 team H2H weekly points format, and we start one C. How do the 3 shake out ROS? Also my RP 3 is Strickland. Dyson Kela and Zych are available. Doolittle was dropped and clears overnight. Saves worth 8, holds 4, and K's are 2 points. Thoughts on best option there Mike? Thanks.
(dylanrox from New Orleans )
I would rank them Yasmani Grandal, Yan Gomes, and Travis D'Arnaud in that format. All three all close, but I give Grandal an edge over the other two. I would drop Hunter Strickland and take a chance that Sean Doolittle is still the closer, given the point structure there. (Mike Gianella)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)My dynasty league appears to hate catchers...Derek Norris, Yan Gomes, and Yadier Molina are all on waivers in a very deep 12-teamer, and there is NO trade market (other than when I overpayed for Sal Perez in my first year in the league and didn't know about the value of catchers until Brian McCann was dropped for David Murphy). Is this the case for all dynasty leagues?
(John from Texas)
I don't play in any dynasty leagues. I would assume that given the keep forever nature of dynasty that the finite shelf life of catchers would make this more likely than in a Roto or redraft. But I'd have to ask our dynasty experts.

Bret?

BRET?!?!?!? (Mike Gianella)
2015-07-16 20:00:00 (link to chat)How do you rate Mesoraco for next year in terms of catchers. Top 5?
(rpol from LA)
I'm to low man on Mesoraco compared to everyone else. If he's healthy he's got to be. Same with Yan Gomes, but I like Grandal a lot, if I just had to pick a catcher I really like right now. (George Bissell)
2015-06-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)J.P, really enjoy the monthly snapshot pieces. Would love to see the buy low extended to say three or so with your thoughts as done for top 5. On that note, who are some other buy low candidates you like beyond those listed in today's article? Cheers
(LoyalRoyal from Kansas)
I was already at 2000+ words on the article, so I didn't want to bog things down with additional words on the buy-low candidates. I appreciate the interest, though! I'll certainly consider adding a short blurb on them going forward. Some other buy low candidates would include: Yan Gomes, Alexei Ramirez, Jimmy Nelson, and Desmond Jennings. (J.P. Breen)
2015-05-05 15:00:00 (link to chat)Big Daddy Shlain, o/u 83 wins for the tribe this season?
(JT Smooth from Loveboat Cap'n)
Thanks for this question. I picked the Indians to be the first wild card team in the AL before the season, but I've since backed off this prediction. I know the Indians have gotten off to rough starts before and turned it around, but something about this team feels a little different to me. Not winning any of the games Kluber has pitched so far this year is a really bad sign and the Yan Gomes injury has really hurt them. I wish you gave me 83 and a half here, but I'll take the under anyway. The Royals and Twins being better than I expected (and the White Sox aren't this bad either) doesn't help them. (Nick Shlain)
2015-04-13 15:00:00 (link to chat)Think there will be any interest from Cleveland on Beef Castillo? Cubs can't carry three catchers all season can they?
(Kyle from Chicago)
Not sure why Cleveland would give up anything of value for Castillo. They have Yan Gomes, one of the best in the business back there. But no, I don't think the Cubs can carry three Cs all season. They have to move Castillo and probably soon. Not sure who emerges as the right fit just yet. (Sahadev Sharma)
2015-01-08 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who won this dynasty trade: Chase Utley, Jayson Werth, Kyle Lohse for Yan Gomes, AJ Griffin, 25 overall in 2015 draft?
(Grizz from America)
This is a good one for the fantasy guys, but I'll give you my take really quickly. Lohse is one of the most underrated pitchers in baseball (I kind of have a man crush on him - http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=24770) so the team getting him automatically wins. Seriously though, this is a future vs. now trade, and the team getting the established guys seems to do really well here. Love Gomes, but your league probably doesn't account for pitch framing, so that tempers his fantasy value a bit. (Jeff Long)
2015-01-28 19:00:00 (link to chat)My dynasty league catchers are Yan Gomes, Jason Castro, and Chance Sisco. Would you consider the catcher position to be a strength for my team into the future or would you be weary of a possible let-down from Gomes, Castro never getting close to his 2013 numbers, and Sisco moving positions?
(Grizzly from Chicago)
I think Castro rebounds into form and I've come around on Gomes. I'd look to trade one of these guys and I'd see what you can get for Sisco. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)I've been offered Yan Gomes for AJ Pierzynski and Chris Owings (RBI S HR AVG RUNS) H2h do you bite Mr. Carsley
(dancini from Pgh)
Yes. I think Gomes and AJ are roughly equivalent, and Owings is a great throw-in. I bite. (Ben Carsley)
2014-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Yan Gomes or Travis D'arnaud which one do I keep for this season? 12 man head to head rotisserie league
(Rob from Baltimore)
Gomes easily for me. (Paul Sporer)
2014-03-19 20:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you rather own in a dynasty? Yan Gomes, Travis D'arnaud, or Miguel Montero?
(CharlieWerner from Manayunk Pa)
I'd prefer d'Arnaud, but if I knew I needed to get production out of the position this year, I'd go Montero. In neither scenario would Gomes enter the equation. (Bret Sayre)
2013-11-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Sam Thanks for the chat always enjoy your truth and a Analysis. Real quick if u were starting a fantasy baseball team who would be top 5-10 guys u would build around??
(Mike from Ri)
1. Mike Trout
2. Bryce Harper
3. Andrew McCutchen
4. Miguel Cabrera
5. Robinson Cano

But those are boring answers. If you want to know which players I might target at some point in a draft or auction, I seem to like Harper, Choo, Yan Gomes, Nelson Cruz, and Kyle Seager a bit more than the average person.

This chat is off to a slow start! (Sam Miller)
2013-10-07 18:00:00 (link to chat)Any under the radar catchers going into next year? I'm stuck with Wellington in a 20 teamer
(Mitch from Iowa)
Hi Mitch

In a 20-team league, probably not. Yan Gomes would be more of a sleeper if everyone would stop talking about him, but still might be in your format. If the Twins consider moving Joe Mauer to another position, Josmil Pinto is instantly intriguing. (Mike Gianella)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Impressive 52 games from Yan Gomes so far. Can he keep this up?
(Jay from San Rafael)
I don't think he's going to be a .300 hitter long term, but I've always liked the bat and pop. Good role player. (Jason Cole)
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat)Mike,12tean H2H ,hr, r, RBI,ave,sb ,xbh.Need a push Wieters has had a off season,available are R. Martin,Avila,Y.Gomes.Looking for a fix.Thanks
(Chesty from New Bern,NC)
Hiya Chesty.

I probably like Wieters more than you do, but of those guys I'd be fine with taking Russell Martin over Matt Wieters. Martin has almost 10 steals (he has 9) and the power numbers are relatively close to Wieters'. I have no problem pulling the trigger there (although keep in mind that Martin goes through BA droughts).

Alex Avila's hot right now but I don't like buying in the middle of the streak. Yan Gomes will get more PT with Mark Reynolds' DFA, but I still am not convinced he's going to be a full timer. Try Martin. (Mike Gianella)
