YearComment
2008 Last year, Keith Ginter spent his second straight season at Triple-A without getting a call. He'll be Boston's insurance policy in 2008.
2007 Gee, is the American League really this tough? Keith Ginter, having hit 19 homers in part-time duty with the Brewers in 2004, was supposed to serve as a super-sub after the A`s traded for him, but he was awful in `05, and last season wasn`t able to earn even a brief furlough from Sacramento. He signed minor-league deal with Indians in January.
2006 Ginter was destined for a backup role with the A`s, and that`s what he`ll have next year as Mark Ellis`s caddy. There`s no particular reason to think he`s done. He hit well in his ego rehabilitation stint in Sacto, and was understandably pressing at the plate in limited big league playing time.
2005 While not a Three True Outcomes hero like Branyan, Ginter has taken a bad rap for his inability to make consistent contact with the ball. His high strikeout totals and mediocre defense have caused both the Astros and now the Brewers to overlook the fact that Ginter is a productive player. Power is his best asset, but he gets on base adequately and isn't a disaster in the field. Sensing an opportunity to find another Mark Bellhorn, Billy Beane acquired Ginter from the Brewers, and will give him a shot at the A's second base job.
2003 Ginter may very well be your Opening Day starter at the hot corner. As temps go, there are worse choices. Heís got a wee bit of sock, and heíll take a free pass now and again, and heís shown promise moving over to third from second, where his defense consistently got bad marks.
2002 After warming up at third base in the 2000 Arizona Fall League, Ginter came into camp hacking to try and win the job with the Astros. Even though he had a good camp, the team sent him back to shuttle between second base and left field in Triple-A, as the Astros explored ways to get him to the majors. Ginter generates good opposite-field power from an uppercut stroke, which is probably what you donít want from a right-handed hitter in Enron. To claim a job in spring training, he'd have to outshine Ensberg or hope that Daryle Ward's defense in left field was a complete disaster. With Burke in the system and Biggio locked in for two more years, Ginterís primary value to the Astros is as trade bait, because his future is right now.
2001 Ensberg and Keith Ginter were selected back-to-back in the middle rounds in 1998, which is a great example of how the Astros have found success drafting college seniors. Ginterís tools donít impress anyone, but he was the runaway MVP of the Texas League, and the Astros love his desire to improve. He should get along famously with Craig Biggio--Ginter was plunked by 24 pitches last year. He didnít play a single game at third base all year, then primarily played third base in the Arizona Fall League. He has a good chance to break camp with the Astros as the starter, with Spiers filling in against tough right-handers. He should have a good season, enough to pick up a few Rookie of the Year votes.
