YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Gindl struggled early on during his second spin through the Pacific Coast League, a fairly common occurrence when a prospect used to yearly promotions suddenly plateaus in the high minors. He recovered in the second half, posting a .291/.347/.486 line that may earn him a shot at a big-league backup role. Longer on production than tools, Gindl generates incongruous lefty power from his compact frame, makes contact, isn’t allergic to ball four, and has a strong arm that fits well in right field. He has worked hard to improve his outfield play, but he remains a tweener who’s stretched in center field and doesn’t swing quite enough lumber for right.
2012 Between 2003 and '04, the Brewers got 0.8 batting WARP and 0.8 pitching WARP from Brooks Keischnick in limited playing time. With expanded bullpens these days, having a player who could function as both a fifth outfielder and a last resort in the bullpen would be useful. Though drafted as an outfielder/pitcher in 2007, Gindl isn't likely to become the next, but he has a good arm and a winning attitude, and his line-drive bat should play as a spare outfielder whenever he gets the call. Still, he'd help a team a lot more if he could soak up innings in blowouts as well.
2011 Vertically-challenged outfielder Caleb Gindl cut down on his strikeouts but lost his home-run pop in his first taste of Double-A, and with scouts down on his tools, he needs eye-popping numbers to stay on the organization's radar.
2010 Gindl continues to show his many doubters that he can flat-out play. Spending the year in a pitcher’s league, the pint-sized outfielder managed to hit more home runs, steal more bases, and improve both his walk and strikeout rates. Gindl displays an advanced approach that should help him survive the big jump to Double-A, and the organization loves his attitude and work ethic. His upside is limited not so much by his size as his defensive range and arm, which will likely limit him to left field in the majors, though the organization believes he wouldn’t be a disaster in center. The longer he succeeds, the easier it becomes to believe he can channel Frank Catalanotto’s career.
2009 A fifth-round 2007 pick who drew draft consideration as a pitcher as well as a hitter despite his short stature, Gindl's an organizational favorite due to his strong work ethic, focus on fundamentals, and his ability to overcome a lack of vowels. He won the Pioneer League’s batting title in his professional debut despite playing against much older competition, then made a successful jump to full-season ball, where he continued to demonstrate a mature approach at the plate and gap power. His strikeout rate is cause for some concern, and there’s not much projection to him physically, but 20-year-olds with his advanced skills don't grow on trees.
2008 A 2007 fifth-round Florida prepster, the 5-foot-9, 185-pound Caleb Gindl doesn't fit the image of a player who drew draft consideration as a hitter and a pitcher, but he made an impressive pro debut, winning the Pioneer League batting title as an 18-year-old playing against 21-year-olds.
