2005 Gil had already lost his job before Javy Lopez arrived, but that signing put an end to whatever thoughts he might have had about getting it back. He can still dream about returning to Baltimore as Lopez's backup, since the closest thing to an in-house option they have is Eli Whiteside, who's never played above Double-A. But Gil has to face the facts: When a team is willing to use Keith Osik and Ken Huckaby instead of you, you inspire less confidence than an Ashlee Simpson sound check.
2003 Crouching behind the plate, Gil is very good at stopping the stolen base. That doesnít keep them at first, though, because he has trouble catching the ball, with 19 passed balls, six more than anyone else in the league, and there arenít even any knuckleballers on the staff to excuse it. Standing beside the plate, heís got a little power, but nothing to get excited about. Heís a replacement-level catcher, maybe a little bit more, but to hold him as one of the shining examples of talent brought in by Syd Thrift is...you know, I was going to say silly, but actually it is pretty appropriate. Gil is one of Sydís best achievements.
2002 Along with Kris Foster, Gil was brought in for Mike Trombley 35 seconds before the trading deadline. He's the latest version of the slick-fielding Henry Blanco-type who doesnít hit much. The real tragedy is that those two months between Rochester and Baltimore made him the best catcher in the entire organization in 2001. (For instant depression, see Werth, Jayson.) Gil should earn most of playing time behind the plate, regardless of the teamís contractual commitment to Fordyce.
2001 Taking advantage of Angel Pena's problems, Geronimo Gil now has a chance at a career. He'll go to camp trying to outplay Pena and Paul LoDuca and squeeze in as a backup to Chad Kreuter. Gil can play and will spend a few years as a quality backup starting in 2002.
2000 Thereís some rumbling that Gil is a prospect, helped by Angel Penaís weight problem and a growing perception that Pena is a head case. While Gil played well in 1999, the performance was out of line with his career and occurred as a Double-A repeater in a good offensive environment. Pena is still a better player, but Gil has created an opportunity for himself.
