2008 Tony Giarratano's comeback from knee surgery was ended by a torn right labrum suffered early in spring training that cost him the entire 2007 season
2007 Tony Giarratano had another ho-hum year at Erie interrupted by a knee injury that required surgery; his glove is major-league caliber, but his window to become a big league utility player is closing quickly.
2006 Giarratano was highly regarded coming into 2005, but a poor year at Erie and a lousy premature debut in Detroit has changed that. When healthy, he`s a very good defensive shortstop who can hit for average and steal a base. The operative words here are `when healthy`;a shoulder injury ended his 2004 season and required surgery, and he missed time with a groin injury last year. Chalk last year up to the lingering effects of the shoulder surgery, and expect much more from him in 2006.
2005 Injuries at Tulane derailed what could have been a fine college career, but they also helped the Tigers steal Giarratano in the third round of the '03 draft. The word that comes up most to describe his defense is 'reliable,' a judgment confirmed by Clay Davenport's ratings. The defense, indeed, could make a big difference, because there are a lot of shortstops with this sort of offensive profile, heavy on batting average and speed but light on power. The ones that can pick it turn into Tony Fernandez or Dave Concepcion; the ones that can't fare considerably worse. Giarratano suffered a shoulder injury that ended his season early, but he's expected to be fully recovered by training camp.
