BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 There are concerns that Gaub won't wow major-league hitters as he's done to their minor-league counterparts so far, based mostly on the fact that he rarely tops 94 mph and that major-league hitters are too good to be deceived by his delivery. When winding up, Gaub has a lot of excess movement, which can be confusing, and he keeps the ball hidden a bit longer than most. The more likely culprit if Gaub isn't able to translate his fastball-slider combo into relief success would be his questionable control, a natural byproduct of his unconventional delivery. If he can lower his walk rate, heíll be more than a LOOGY; if he canít, heíll be less than a major leaguer.
2011 Once seen as a key part of the DeRosa deal, John Gaub was felled by Steve Blass disease in July, losing all sense of the strike zone and landing on the Inactive List, with no suggestion as to when or if he'll be back.
2010 More swag from the DeRosa trade, lefty reliever John Gaubís eye-opening 2009 campaign saw the former University of Minnesota closer dominate in his first taste of the high minors. Gaubís offerings arenít overpowering, but a deceptive delivery and late movement have helped his low-90s fastball and plus slider give hitters fits, striking out 12.9 batters per nine innings in his short career. Effective against both righties and lefties, Gaub projects as more than a LOOGY, and even if he doesnít break camp with the big club he should be toeing the rubber in Wrigley before the year is out.
2009 There aren't many 23-year-old prospects in Low-A, but former University of Minnesota closer Gaub makes the cut: you can't ignore 14 strikeouts and six hits per nine in wiffle ball, let alone the minors, especially from a southpaw. Shoulder surgery in college knocked him down to the 21st round of the '06 draft, but his low-90s moving fastball and plus slider could lead to a major league career in the pen.
