2001 Here's another example of a pitcher with major-league stuff who hurt his arm before he learned how to use it. Chris Fussell has frustrated the Royals since he was acquired for Jeff Conine. He can be dominant for stretches of an inning or two but has yet to find anything resembling consistency. He tweaked his arm midseason and missed two months; when he was recalled in September, Muser went out of his way to avoid using him. His future in this organization is probably over.
2000 Shrewdly acquired from Baltimore for Jeff Conine just before the 1999 season, Fussell pitched well in Omaha. In the major leagues he would usually keep his composure for about two innings before he remembered he was facing major-league hitters, at which point his outings would degenerate into a series of four-pitch walks and grooved fastballs. He was finally moved to the bullpen in August, but by then his season was shot. I have little doubt that with good tutelage he can be successful in the major leagues.
1999 A well-regarded prospect who has a lot of pitches, but not one pitch dominant enough to carry him to the majors yet. The biggest problem, as always, is control. When and if it comes around, he'll be a fine pitcher, otherwise he'll stay right at this level.
1998 Fussell has been a terrific strikeout pitcher throughout his young career, but his control and health have been troublesome. The two are not unrelated; wildness means more pitches and more walks, more walks leads to more pitches from the stretch. He missed half of 1996 with soreness in his elbow after averaging 119 equivalent pitches per start. He started the year strongly in Frederick, but was pounded after being promoted to Bowie, getting up to 140 equivalent pitches. Thatís even more than Bill Pulsipher in 1994, even though Bill had 70 more innings.
1997 Fussell didnít start pitching until his junior year in high school, but has progressed quickly. The Oriolesí ninth-round pick in 1994 dominated the Appalachian League in 1995, going 9-1 with a 2.19 ERA and 98 Ks in 66 innings, making him the leagueís top prospect. He started out very strong in Frederick last year, but started to fade as the All-Star break approached and missed the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.
