2008 As frustrating a project pitcher as Eveland, Fruto was dealt twice in a nine-month span, first from Seattle to D.C. in the Jose Vidro deal, then to Arizona for minor league first baseman Chris Carter the Elder. In between, the Nats tried to turn him into a starter to exploit his mix of occasionally tasty breaking stuff, a plus changeup, and consistent low-90s heat. That failed, and Fruto's ongoing control problems showed no sign of letting up even after returning to the pen. He's young and talented, but handicapped by something of a short fuse and has no track record for success. Still, anything is possible with some good coaching, hard work, and the occasional timeout.
2007 Scouts love Fruto`s stuff--the mid-90s heat, the big changeup, the plus curve. With King Felix in the major league rotation, Fruto might have been the best arm the Mariners had in the high minors last year. Still, Fruto showed very little command of his pitches in an extended tryout with the big league club, and there were grumblings about his makeup. Thrown into the Vidro-Snelling trade, Fruto will get a new start with the Nationals.
