BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 The Pirates had hoped their man Friday could blossom into an everyday shortstop when they drafted him out of Rice in the third round of the 2007 draft and cut him a $355,000 check. However, he was moved to second base at Triple-A last season in favor of Argenis Diaz and Pedro Ciriaco. In the wake of his position change, Friday's future occupation looks to be that of a utility infielder. He could have some limited value in that role, since he draws walks and can play adequate defense at both middle infield spots.
2010 Friday seemed poised for a breakout season at Double-A last year until felled by an inner-ear infection in late April. He was never the same and wound up with pedestrian offensive numbers. Friday is a fundamentally sound defensive shortstop who would be able to handle playing the position at the major-league level. The question is whether he will hit enough, and it's one he is going to have to start answering in the affirmative fairly soon if he's going to continue to be considered a prospect, especially with Chase d'Arnaud coming behind him in the farm system.
2009 Because of ankle and back problems, Brian Friday has yet to get his professional career on track since being the Pirates' third-round draft pick in 2007, but he has Eckstein-like batting skills with excellent glove work at short, making him the best internal candidate to be Jack Wilson's eventual replacement.
2008 Brian Friday was a two-time All-American at Rice, but didn't bring along his college batting eye for his professional debut last summer.
