2013 Five years removed from his last big-league stint and having played everywhere from Japan to Mexico to the independent leagues, Ford unexpectedly returned to the majors last season after the Orioles found themselves lacking organizational outfield depth. Thatís the high note of the story, though, as Ford was abysmal in his time with Baltimore. He showed some power at Triple-A, but there was a reason he was gone so long. Ford still plays hard and can run a bit, but the most that can be expected of him is to hold down a roster spot as a not-terrible fifth outfielder. The worst is that heís back in the bushes by this time next year.
2008 A second straight poor season chased fan favorite Lew Ford to the minors, and then to Japan's Hanshin Tigers.
2007 Splat. Ford has gone downhill in a big way since 2004, though his numbers last year where brought down when injuries elsewhere in the outfield forced him to play through a strained oblique. He`s no more than an extra outfielder at this point, but he has enough skills to be better than this, and still of value to the Twins.
2006 The danger with promoting a player late in his baseball life is that you might get caught up in what he`s done for you after he`s already started to leave his best seasons behind. After all, if he`s cheap, and he`s okay, he`s someone a `small market` team wants, right? Ford`s just a good fourth outfielder pressed into everyday play, and at 29, he`s not going to get any better than that. The Twins cannot afford to make the same mistake with Ford that they did with Jacque Jones, holding onto him beyond the time that he gets genuinely expensive.
2005 You might be scratching your noggin and wondering why PECOTA is so down on Ford, but let's face it, having a year like he did in his age-27 season is hard to "break out" beyond. Take solace in the fact that PECOTA sees a strong likelihood that he's going to build on it anyway, just don't expect a long career. Edgar Martinez aside, when you can play a fourth outfielder who hits well enough he can start for any of the other three, and soak at-bats at DH, that's a great way to exploit the role.
