2014-09-15 19:30:00 (link to chat)Does Wilmer Flores make a fantasy impact next year? He's hit a few home runs past few weeks, but is next year too soon for league-average production?
(Mr from Met)
I like Flores and have for a while. If you want to tell me he can serve as a league-average offensive second baseman next year, I'd listen. Could be a sneaky decent MI option in 14+ team leagues next year. (Ben Carsley)
2014-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)You've given us multiple snapshots of Dilson Herrera over the course of the season. One thing I haven't read much about, though, is whether the Mets are still experimenting with him at shortstop. I don't see that working thanks to the arm, but would be interested in reading your take.
(Jonathan from New York)
He's played a little bit of SS in Double-A, so I guess the experiment isn't over, but it should be. He's not a shortstop, but he could be a good second baseman defensively. He's a great athlete. He could play SS in a pinch (he'd be better than Wilmer Flores there), but he's overmatched there. The only reason he should still be playing SS is if he ends up in a utility profile rather than an everyday player, which is a possibility, so in that regard, it's not the worst idea to work him out there from time to time. He's not an everyday shortstop though. (Jeff Moore)
2014-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)WHY OH WHY Wont the Mets actually give Wilmer Flores a shot, does Sandy Alderson need to take Ruben Tejada away from Terry Collins?
(Steve from Winnipeg)
I don't know, Steve. Ive been saying since this past winter that they needed to give Flores at-bats, even if it meant having to watch him butcher things at SS. Who cares? It's not going to be a competitive season anyway. Let's see just how well the kid can hit. But instead we're getting more confirmation that he can rake in Vegas. Big whoop. I don't get it. He needs to play regularly in the majors and I don't care at what position. The Mets are going to go into next year still not knowing what kind of bat he is at the major league level, and that's a travesty. (Jeff Moore)
2014-07-31 19:30:00 (link to chat)What do you make of Nick Franklin after the trade? How do you value him and Wilmer Flores now, and if Jesse Chavez moves to the pen is he worth dropping in deep fantasy leagues
(Dale from Detroit)
This is a big help for Franklin, obviously, though he's still going to have to earn his playing time. I'd rank him above Flores, who I don't hate. Yes, Chavez is worth dropping in 16-or fewer-team leagues. Hold on to him in super deep, but that IP count is scary. (Ben Carsley)
2014-04-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Help! I have Team 6 in NL All Stars, a 2-time defending division champ. In my quest to try to win the title last year (falling just short), I traded away many of my draft picks for this year. That meant that I wasn't able to draft much depth this year, and what depth I was able to draft (or keep), and whom I was counting on (hoping) to play in the majors are not (George Kottaras, Tommy La Stella, Oscar Tavares, Wilmer Flores, Tony Abreu) or are injured (Carlos Quentin with his annual injury, Josh Johnson). All of this leaves me with exactly one C, two 1B, one 2B, one part-time 3B, one SS, four OFers, five SPs (plus Thornburg), and five SRs. I have three SPs that are in the minors or should pitch later this year (TJ surgery-all Padres) and the aforementioned players languishing in the minors. I'm still competitive (above .500) and wish to remain so this year. What should I be looking for in the upcoming supps? I'd like another SP, but the best two available are Jorge de la Rosa & Jordan Lyles. I don't trust either. Or should I just try to eliminate all the AAA appearances by infielder and outfielder and draft accordingly?
(Mark68 from A Mile High)
We'd probably go with the best SP with one pick and the best middle infielder with the second since a sixth starter can be used regardless and middle infield depth is one of the most painful places to see AAA show up on the weekly results. (Scoresheet Chat with Ben, Jared, and Ian)
2014-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospect delivers a Puig-like explosion this season? Willing to stash till mid June if there is some bang for my patience in the second half. Top targets are Baez Taveras Springer Polanco and perhaps Buxton but he seems a year away.
(Travis Fryman's Mitt from Pontiac, MI)
I really love Springer, but I think he could be up in May. Taveras has to get healthy first. However, Puig was 79th on the BP 101 last year, so if you're looking for someone deeper, lemme throw Wilmer Flores and Michael Choice out there as potential breakouts. (Paul Sporer)
2014-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Wilmer Flores is playing ss in the second half of todays game, any chance he look good and stick there?
(dcapofari from ny)
He won't be a good shortstop. He doesn't have the range to excel there at the highest level. I guess the kind way of putting it is that Flores isn't an ideal shortstop, physically speaking. He has really nice hands and a strong arm, but the range is just what you want at the position. I think he could be a very good 3B, but obviously that's not going to happen with the Mets. Underrated player, though. He doesn't get enough credit for being able to hit. He's a natural hitter that keeps getting stronger. (Jason Parks on the Completed Prospect Rankings)
2014-01-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Surprised to see Wilmer Flores on the list. Doubly surprised to see him in the positional splits as a shortstop. What do you expect of him this season? Thanks.
(Chris from Boston)
Not at shortstop. I think the bat is real. Not crazy but he can hit. It looks a lot better if he can make 2B work. Not as sexy if he's just a 1B. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)do you see Wilmer Flores sticking at 2B?
(dastard from ON)
I would like for that to happen, as he's an infinitely more interesting player at 2B than at 1B or in the outfield. But no, I don't past 2016 or so. They'll only live with that type of defense for so long. (Ben Carsley)
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Can you rank these first-year 2b in order of who will have the best career? Kolten Wong, Scooter Gennett, Nick Franklin, Chris Owings, Wilmer Flores, Jonathan Schoop, Marcus Semien, Grant Green. Thank you.
(The Kernel from Pasadena)
Wong, Owings, Franklin, Schoop, Gennett, Semien, Flores, Green. (Jason Parks)
2013-08-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Grrrrr Ike Davis....Can't we just put Wilmer Flores at 1B and watch him rake?
(Angry Mets Fan from Queens)
Hey, Ike Davis is hitting .350/.530/.550 since the ASB! I don't think Davis is a superstar, but it's far too soon to give up on him, especially when we're talking about a bad Mets team. Flores has some talent with the bat and maybe a little more in the hit tool, but it's a little less power. I don't think he's a lock to be a better stick than Davis. (Jason Cole)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)If Wilmer Flores can play passable MLB defense at 2b, what kind of prospect is he?
(Pete from NYC)
It looks like the Mets are going to force Flores' to be passable defensively. If he can do enough defensively Flores has the chance to be a solid average or better regular because he does have some value in his bat. (Zach Mortimer)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Im in a 20 team dynasty league with a 5 man prospect roster. Staring me in the face on the waiver wire are Puello, Berrios, Stratton, and Eddie Butler. Would you add any of these guys over current guys on my roster Wilmer Flores, Chris Owings, Alen Hanson?
(Alec from Scottsdale, Az)
I really like Butler and Berrios, but I dont know anything about fantasy baseball so I'm not much help. If you want any advice about my fantasies for Tom Verducci, please re-submit. (Jason Parks)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)When do you see Wilmer Flores and Brad Miller getting called up? Also, Stetson Allie is absolutely crushing the ball. Do you think he is in the top 100 by the end of the year and what would you grade his power? 70/80?
(Tim from Philly)
I honestly have no idea. I could see him coming into the top 100 and his power is filthy. I'd want to see him before dropping 70/80 or at least read reports from people I respect, neither of which have happened yet. (Paul Sporer)
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Jason, do you believe Wilmer Flores can hold his own at second base? Will the bat be enough to compensate for the lack of defensive chops?
(Frank from NJ)
I don't. I don't like the defensive profile. He can swing a bat, but when I look at Flores I don't see a middle infielder at the highest level. (Jason Parks)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)Should I be worried Wilmer Flores didn't crack the list?
(Schackmj from Hoboken)
I'd be worried if he did. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat)Does Wilmer Flores have the range and athleticism to play 2B in the major leagues?
(Joe Hogan from FL)
I don't think so. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects)
2012-12-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Completely Gratuitous 4-Team Blockbuster Trade Proposal: -Mets send R.A. Dickey to Red Sox, send Lucas Duda + Domingo Tapia to Indians & send Wilmer Flores to Diamondbacks -Red Sox send Archie Bradley + Anthony Ranaudo to Indians -Indians send Asdrubal Cabrera to Diamondbacks & send Shin-Soo Choo + Vinnie Pestano to Mets -Diamondbacks send Justin Upton to Mets Care to offer gratuitous thoughts?
(mattstupp from NYC)
Math makes my head hurt (Ian Miller)
2012-11-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Any of these prospects make a difference this year? Gary Brown, Darrin Ruf, Wilmer Flores, Christian Yelich, or Kolten Wong.
(Frederick from The Hills)
Ruf is the closest to the bigs, so there's a good chance we'll see him a bunch this year. Seems unlikely any of the others make an Opening Day Roster, but Kolten Wong is interesting given St. Louis' void at second base. Flores could stand a mid-to-late season chance with the Mets in a similar boat. Brown could be late season, Yelich is probably still a year off. (Derek Carty)
2012-04-03 12:00:00 (link to chat)So much is talked about the four top pitching prospects in the org, it's interesting to hear you talk about position guys like Valdespin. What kind of development path/timetable are you looking for from the higher profile position prospects, specifically Wilmer Flores, Puello and Lagares? Also, I know it might be difficult for you to answer this question without being unfair to a player now in another org, but why was FMart exposed to waivers and lost for nothing, rather than traded (not even a bucket of baseballs and a half eaten ham sandwich)? Particularly since he had an option year left, it was a head scratching move for many fans.
(Kyle from Los Angeles)
Kyle, we were disappointed to lose FMart, but often times it comes down to which player(s) you believe have the best chance to make it through waivers. The good news is that we're now at a point with our 40-man that players are actually getting claimed by other organizations. That's a good problem to have.

As for Puello, Flores, and others, it's important to remember just how young these guys are. Puello just turned 21 and Flores is still 20. At this point, if they move up a level per year, they'll still be in a good position on the age/time spectrum. (Paul DePodesta)
2011-12-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)This time next year... Wilmer Flores and Marte... considered good/very good prospects or no-longer seen as potential regulars?
(Wilmer from VZ)
I'm not a big fan of either RIGHT NOW, forget about next year. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-06-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)What do you hear about Wilmer Flores? I know I should be patient with a 19 year old, but it feels like he's been around forever. More to the point - he seems to be going backwards in his second tour of the Florida State League.
(Jake from Kalamazoo)
I was never a fan. He is still young, and he still has time to figure it out. Be patient, but I wouldn't be overly optimistic. (Jason Parks)
2011-03-22 11:00:00 (link to chat)What are your thoughts on Wilmer Flores?
(Robert from Queens)
Two days ago during a minor league game played on Field 7 (a field that is built precisely to the dimensions of CitiField - walls and all), Flores went oppo to deep right center field. Oppo. Right-center. In CitiField. He's 19. Like him! Seriously, he can really hit. (Paul DePodesta)
2011-02-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Ok while I'm trolling for bottom feeders, any of these guys worth a place on my minor league team at SS: Grant Green, Wilmer Flores, J. Iglesias? Thanks again.
(Dan46S from Boston)
I myself like Iglesias. (Ken Funck)
2011-01-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin, love the chats. Now that my Fiesta Bowl passing record is safe, who do you think is the top breakout candidate for 2011 from this list: Aaron Hicks, Wilmer Flores, Jonathan Singleton.
(BrowningNagle from Louisville, KY)
A. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-04-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Surprised to see Wilmer Flores repeating low A. Is this a change of philosophy for the Mets?
(Rob from Alaska)
I wouldn't read too much into it. It's not like he dominated the level last year, and he'll still be among the youngest every day players there -- why rush things? (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)What position does Wilmer Flores end up at? What is his ETA to MLB?
(Jacob from Detroit)
Maybe 3B, more likely RF. September, 2012? (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-11-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin, What did scouts have to say about Wilmer Flores this year? Is there a concern about the power if he has to move from shortstop?
(Trevor127 from NYC)
There's just no way he's a shortstop in the end, so it's not an if, it's a when. Still very talented for his age, so don't get too crazy. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-07-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin, Wilmer Flores is handling himself pretty well in Low-A. Is there a guy you liken him to? If he doesn't stick at SS can his bat play elsewhere?
(Kamryn from Wilmington)
He's just so young that he can go in so many directions. I still don't hate the Miggy Cab comp, but that's also way too much to compare a guy so far away to. There's nowhere he's a shortstop in the end, but I really like the bat. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-03-19 15:00:00 (link to chat)What's your view on Wilmer Flores? Is he compared to Miguel Cabrera because it's appropriate, or because it's convenient?
(joalryan from Chicago)
Obviously, anytime you are comparing a guy out of short season with an established superstar, it's dangerous. Still, it's a very promising bat for a teenager, and like Cabrera, he's got a thick lower half that's going to limit him defensively down the road. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-03-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)We often hear of the projection that a young player (e.g. an international signee like Carlos Triunfel or Wilmer Flores) will fill out, lose athleticism, and need to shift positions as he grows up while in the minors. How much of this projection comes from evidence/analysis by Medical personnel, versus speculation/experience by scouts?
(Aaron from YYZ)
Almost none from the medical side. There's more input with the draft and trades for the medical team and even that varies greatly from team to team. (Will Carroll)
