BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2002 Fletcher played all of last season with severe back pain. While a rigorous stretching and strengthening regimen helped him pick up his numbers after the All-Star break, he never came close to approaching his career-best 2000 form. With high mileage on his odometer and oodles of catching depth in the organization, Fletcher’s days in Toronto are numbered. Last year was not an aberration; the sooner the Jays trade him, the better.
2001 He's been an underrated player for a number of seasons, in part because there are some incredible catchers playing right now. Darrin Fletcher provides left-handed power and a decent OBP without being Todd Hundley defensively.
2000 In the shallow pool that is “American League Catchers,” Darrin Fletcher stands tall. He doesn’t throw particularly well, but the rest of his defense is good. A left-handed-hitting catcher who can contribute with the bat is valuable. The projection is low; I expect him to produce in the .260 EqA area for a few more years.
1999 Although he'll never get good marks for his glovework, Fletcher's a handy source of left-handed pop from behind the plate. You could gripe that signing him when Santiago was already under contract was a case of throwing good money after bad. Ash may understand the idea of sunk costs, though, and decided to get at least a good platoon or some real offense out of the position. Then Santiago got hurt, and he snagged Kevin Brown. Given the choice between spending money or keeping Sandy Martinez around, I'd say Ash made the right choice.
1998 Has had two semi-decent seasons at the plate in the last three years. As a left-handed-hitting catcher, he should be able to find employment for quite awhile, perhaps becoming the new Jeff Reed. On July 18, 1997, he stole the first base of his major-league career. Signed with the Blue Jays, where he’s expected to platoon with Benito Santiago.
1997 After years of steady improvement, Fletcher began his decline phase last year. The Expos have him on the block, but more likely than not he’ll platoon with Widger for a year or two. Eventually he’ll pack his bags and take his have-glove, will-travel show from team to team as a Greg Myers-like semi-backup.
1996  Fletcher's improvement over the last five years is almost eerily consistent. Playing in Montreal isn't going to earn him any endorsement deals, but playing as well as he has does earns him a nod as one of the NL's better catchers.

If that's your litmus test in me believing in him, then yet. Not a great defender, but can hit. Best comp I've heard from a scout is Darrin Fletcher. (Kevin Goldstein)
