YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 His father Bien was a player, coach, and manager, so it's no surprise that the kid plays an intelligent, steady game and swings a patient bat; his career BB/K rate speaks to inherited baseball acumen. Last season, he adjusted quickly to Triple-A pitching and took the third base job from incumbent slugger Matt Mangini (who was released in August). However, the smallish Figueroa, acquired in the 2009 Jason Bartlett deal, lacks the power for third base and perhaps the range for second, his regular position (he played just under half his games there last season). He may, like his father, top out at Triple-A, but he could become the Rays' Will Rhymes v. 2.0(13).
2011 Cole Figueroa walked more often than he struck out in 2010, and his on-base percentage exceeded his slugging for the second straight season. Without power to worry pitchers, he will see more strikes as pitchers challenge him at the higher levels, but if he can keep drawing walks he will remain intriguing. He'll continue his career in the Rays' system after becoming part of the Jason Bartlett swap.
