DateQuestionAnswer
2014-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mike Fiers 2.0. Thoughts?
(edgardiazrocks from here today)
he's added some velocity, which makes his stuff play up (I like FA/FC/CU guys FWIW, they can be deceiving over the top) (note: I'm rushing now since I'm out of time but the queue is not empty, I'll try and quickly get to all of the rest) (Harry Pavlidis)
2014-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mike Fiers, Carrasco, or deGromm, you like those guys the rest of the way?
(LANEGS1974 from Atl)
Carrasco, he's kinda nasty (Harry Pavlidis)
2014-05-07 17:00:00 (link to chat)Think Mike Fiers gets another chance in the majors. Seems to be lighting it up in AAA?
(scott from az)
It's possible, but at the moment the Brewers rotation is performing and looks crowded. I would say that he's probably the first guy up if there's an injury. (Mike Gianella)
2013-07-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which is the real Wily Peralta? The guy with the awful whip and era numbers through mid June, or the guy who has been very serviceable since mid June? I like the numbers of late, but given the relatively young age, I don't know whether this is a guy who has finally figured things out or if he is just on a nice run and us this year's Mike Fiers? Thanks!
(OldEnglishD from Macomb Mi)
I've been high on Peralta for a while. Commanding that power sinker is challenging but he seems to be getting it harnessed. Not many guys can work as a starter with that kind of velocity and sink on the ball. I think he's very much for real, solid middle rotation arm who will eat a lot of innings and kill a lot of worms. (Harry Pavlidis)
2013-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Tony Cingrani this year's Mike Fiers - a guy who succeeds early based upon deception, despite lacking great stuff, until the league figures him out?
(Dusty Baker from Cincy)
Cingrani won't keep up his ridiculous pace, but he's a solid pitcher. Jason Parks ranked him no. 3 among Reds prospects entering the season. (Geoff Young)
2013-03-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Loved thr article on velocity risers. You mention creating hip-shoulder separation as a key element to doing it, and single out the possibility of delaying trunk rotation. Justin Verlander seems to do that really well. Are there specific pitchers you think could find an extra tick or two by just rotating earlier with their lower half, headed into a new season?
(Matt Trueblood from Fridley, MN)
Great question and awesome observation on Verlander. His torque is incredible, with a killer combination of upper-body load, delayed trunk rotation, and mechanical repetition.

There are a umber of pitchers who tend to rotate the hips very late, choosing to fire hips and shoulders together, though this technique places the kinetic responsibility lower on the chain. Some of the pitchers who use this "hip whip," and who would likely benefit from greater hip-shoulder separation include: Mike Fiers, Mike Minor, Matt Harrison, and Clayton Kershaw.

Kershaw's strategy is more than likely tied to his hip problems, and he is the #1 pitcher that I would like to see find a more efficient method for generating torque. The problem is that he has recently found his ideal timing, after years of struggling with repetition, and making such an adjustment could set him back for a stretch while he coordinated the new mechanics. So it's hard to fault the team for not making an adjustment.

On the jukebox: Pantera, "Cemetery Gates" (Doug Thorburn)
2013-03-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which players mechanics worry you the most?
(Henry from bar)
The easy answer is Chris Sale, and it's a legitimate concern. I also worry about Tyler Skaggs, Wily Peralta, and Mike Fiers for various reasons. (Doug Thorburn)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Michael Fiers the rest of the season?
(Harvey from Lakewood)
I wouldn’t expect him to continue posting a 9.0+ K/9, but I do expect him to be quite good. He’s a guy I liked coming into the year—I drafted him in the reserve round of both Tout and LABR NL—and I suspect he’ll be even continue being deep mixed-league worthy. Not a hard thrower, but he’s got a good mix of pitches and plus command. (Derek Carty)
2011-09-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Between JD Martinez, Michael Fiers, and Miles Mikolas, how did Nova Southeastern not make the NCAAs in 2009?
(Dallas Comegys from DePaul)
Because they are a D-II school. Where's Kenny Patterson? Your name made me laugh, I hope that doesn't make me a douche. (Kevin Goldstein)
