BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 English performed well in High-A in 2008, but he was too old for the level at 24, having struggled to advance through the Giants farm system thanks to frequent injuries. His control fell by the wayside last season, a devastating blow to a lefty relying predominantly on a fastball and changeup. The Nationals claimed him off of waivers on September 11 and see him as a relief specialist. He has shown signs of promise in the past, but the injuries and struggles with command and control are concrete reasons for his waiver availability.
2009 After having his progress slowed by problems of motivation and ulnar nerve surgery, the latter of which wiped out his 2005 season, English was converted back to starting at High-A last year and responded by nearly halving his walk rate while still striking out a man per inning. A lefty with an average fastball and a put-away changeup, he notably struck out nine men in a three-inning relief outing in 2007.
