2013-01-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)To me, the most overlooked thing regarding the results of the voting is Kenny Lofton's not receiving the requisite 5% of the vote to remain on the ballot. 1. Do you think in a regular year without a polarizing issue like steroids, would he have received the vote? 2. Now that he can only be inducted by the veterans committee, what do you think his chances are? 3. Do you think his bouncing around from team to team later in his career hurts the voter's perception of him? I think it's very unfortunate that he won't stay on the ballot. I'm one who, after reading your analysis and through my own observation of him when he was active, certainly would get my vote if I had one.
(Mike Shumka from Milton, Ontario)
I think Lofton suffers less because of the steroid protest than the size of the crowd on the ballot and the fact that a certain segment of the electorate dramatically undervalues walks and defense. Nearly all of the Hall's recent injustices fit into that pattern - think of Ron Santo, Bobby Grich and Tim Raines, for example.

Lofton will have a long wait ahead of him if his cause is taken up by the Veterans Committee. Among center field contemporaries, Jim Edmonds, Andruw Jones and Carlos Beltran will all have their cases taken up by the BBWAA, and they've got reasonable merits and similar JAWS scores too. (Jay Jaffe on the Hall of Fame)
2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Better fantasy season in '11: Andrew McCutchen or Colby Rasmus? I'm concerned about the Cards re-working Colby's swing so he "hits more singles." WTF?
(Sanders from CT)
McCutchen in 2009: .286/.365/.471, 22 SB. McCutchen in 2010: .286/.365/.449, 33 SB. Both years are very valuable and I actually think his true level of power is in between both of those slugs. He could even step forward this year and be a 20-20 guy. With Rasmus you have a player with a higher ceiling -- I don't see McCutchen being more than a .290/.365/.465 hitter, while Rasmus could be very similar to Jim Edmonds. For next season, however, it really depends on your desire to withstand risk. McCutchen is more of a sure thing, but Rasmus has the higher ceiling. (Eric Seidman)
2010-10-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)I felt old when I compiled this list in April. Tweleve 2010 MLB players were older than me. How many will be back next year? 1 Jamie Moyer -- Phillies --18-Nov-62 2 Tim Wakefield -- Red Sox --2-Aug-66 3 Omar Vizquel -- White Sox --24-Apr-67 4 Trevor Hoffman -- Brewers -- 13-Oct-67 5 Matt Stairs -- Padres -- 27-Feb-68 6 Brad Ausmus -- Dodgers -- 14-Apr-69 7 Arthur Rhodes -- Reds -- 24-Oct-69 8 Ken Griffey Jr. -- Mariners -- 21-Nov-69 9 Mariano Rivera-- Yankees -- 29-Nov-69 10 Takashi Saito -- Braves -- 14-Feb-70 11 Jim Edmonds -- Brewers -- 27-Jun-70 12 Mark Grudzielanek -- Indians -- 30-Jun-70
(ted from the cubicle)
Most of them, I think. Next year is Wakefield's last season though. Matt Stairs wants to come back for one more year, at least. Arthur Rhodes is a reliever, so he'll pitch until he can't. (Marc Normandin)
2010-08-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Follow up question: Did the Ludwick/Westbrook trade alter your thoughts at all re: the race with the Reds?
(Robert from Springfield)
I thought it closed the gap between the two teams. The Cardinals got worse.

Reds traded Chris Dickerson for Jim Edmonds today. Makes them a bit better, since they'll play Edmonds and they wouldn't have played Dickerson once he got healthy. Don't hate it for Brewers, who get some LH OBP and OF defense for, basically, free. He's a nice match with Gomez in CF. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who should be the Yankees opening day CF in 2009?
(Snakedoctor18 from New York)
Has the ship sailed on Zombie Mickey Mantle yet?

I'm certainly not wowed by the Yankees' in-house options, a pool that nominally includes Melky Cabrera, Brett Gardner, Johnny Damon and Nick Swisher. I don't think the latter two can carry the position defensively anymore, and I'm less than wowed by the offense offered by either of the former two, unless Cabrera has spent the entire winter being beaten over the head with a fungo bat in an effort to impart the slightest modicum of common sense into his thick skull.

Which means that a better solution must lie outside the organization. I'd be willing to see if Jim Edmonds has anything left given his rebound with the Cubs. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-11-24 15:00:00 (link to chat)I seem to remember several years ago reports that Billy Beane was on the verge of trading for Jim Edmonds, but he went to St. Louis instead. I would LOVE to know which side nixed the deal and why. Can I find that anywhere? You could probably write a whole book about stuff like this...
(Jed from San Francisco)
Not sure. You'd probably have to find an insider willing to talk. (Caleb Peiffer)
2008-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)If the Yankees don't end up with Teixeira, and Swisher ends up at first, doesn't signing Jim Edmonds make sense as a placeholder until Austin Jackson can come up?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
Is it Edmonds in San Diego or Chicago? And would someone please tell me what changed when he switched teams?
To answer the question, no, I don't think so. (Will Carroll)
2008-10-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)Did the Padres do anything "wrong" en route to this 99-loss season or is this actually an Oakland-like case of a pretty savvy organization just running out of chips and the timing not being right to compete. That said do you like the Padres going into the next 5 years, can they recover?
(Red from Mobile, AL)
They wasted time with Jim Edmonds, but really, nothing is fundamentally wrong with the organization right now. They are going to feel the effects of some bad drafts for a while--they had a three - or four-year stretch of nothing, so they can't really reload at the moment. 2009 won't be a success, but they should be better after that. Great, great front office. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-06-17 15:00:00 (link to chat)Jay: It seems to me that the statistical 'cliff' that potential HOFers can fall off of is much higher than for normal players. Maybe the evidence is more anecdotal than actual, but I seem to remember many of those players (guys like Knoblauch and Rice leap to mind instantly) when I think of players of my era that were 'destined' for the HOF. Does the wide gulf between normal and HOF-levels of performance play any part in calculating future HOF worthiness of active players?
(sodbuster from Wagner)
Well, it's certainly a longer way down from being very good to so craptastic that you have to hang up your spikes in your mid-30s as both Rice and Chuckie Knobs did, and it tends to generate more coverage as to "what went wrong" though in fact these players were at least exceptional for some period of their careers.

But you're onto something with your question. Predicting Hallworthiness among active players is a tricky business. Even a great and useful predictive tool like PECOTA isn't all that helpful, because HOF caliber players tend to continue outstripping their projections late into their careers. Guys in their mid-30s who might have a shot may still need to hit their 75 percentile projections or above year after year in order to make a great case for themselves. Here I'm thinking of perennial All-Stars like Chipper Jones (who I think will make it) and Jorge Posada (I hope but don't think he will) as well as the fall-off-the-table cases like Carlos Delgado and Jim Edmonds. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-05-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Rumor has it the Cubs are thinking about moving Fukudome to CF and playing Micah Hoffpaiur in RF against right handers, then shifting Fukudome back over and playing Reed Johnson in CF against southpaws. Don't get me wrong, I like Hoffpaiur, but is this really a better decision than just cutting Jim Edmonds and putting Pie back into the platoon role in CF?
(Rob from Bloomington, IL)
Of course not, although I'd note that Pie is sucking wind down at Iowa. (Nate Silver)
2008-03-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Joe, love your analysis. You have mentioned in a couple articles that you're worried about Jim Edmonds in Petco's outfield. Do you have any evidence that Petco's outfield (or center field, specifically) is that much larger than the average outfield and/or that it's that much more difficult to play defense out there (again, than the average park)?
(MB from Boston)
Well I don't have square footage, but it's 404 to the gaps, deeper than anywhere else. When you go there, it really is disconcerting how big it is. We also know that Petco kills runs and homers, in part because of its dimensions.

So I'm comfortable describing it as one of the toughest CFs to play. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-03-11 12:00:00 (link to chat)I can't help but think that the Padres still have half a dozen better options for their outfield then the guys they have slated now. The Red Sox and Angels have extra outfielders to trade. Kenny Lofton or Corey Patterson seem like reasonable fits when you consider the salary they'll be paying out to Jim Edmonds. When did KT get all Pat Gillick-y?
(Wilson from Cambridge)
I would have liked to see them snag Patterson so that Edmonds could play left field. The man cannot cover the ground in that park. He'd be an upgrade in left for one year, though. Lofton isn't the answer to play next to him...honestly, it might be worth seeing how much of Gary Matthews' Jr.'s contract the Angels are willing to eat.

If the outfield is Hairston/Headley, Edmonds and Giles, I weep for that flyball pitching staff. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Brian Giles and Jim Edmonds fall off the cliff this year in San Diego?
(theguag from Louisville)
Aren't they already in the act of falling, if still short of hitting the bottom? I think the answer is generally yes.

Time to start winding down, so let's do a couple of quickies to wrap up. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-02-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)There was some interesting centerfielder talk on the Max Kellerman radio show today. They argued for Jim Edmonds' HOF case and were also discussing Ichiro, at one point even comparing him to Tris Speaker and Ty Cobb. Is Ichiro really at their level?
(Peter from Staten Island)
No, I don't think he is. He's got the speed and batting averages of their games, but he doesn't have the power. If you look at Clay's translated stats on the DT pages for these players, you'll see that Cobb works out to .355/.423/.617, and Speaker to .324/.410/.580, but Ichiro to "only" .348/.398/.462. If Speaker and Cobb had had the heart of their career in the lively ball era, they likely would have been huge power hitters, with some of those doubles and triples heading over the fences... As for Edmonds, I think he compares very well with the great CFs. How many of them were both great gloves and slugged .500? Very few. I think Edmonds is deserving, but he's going to have problems because he's short in the counting stats department due to not becoming a regular until 25 and subsequent injuries. (Steven Goldman)
2008-01-23 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Pecota have any profound thoughts on Jim Edmonds in Petco? Do you?
(Sterling Hitchcock from San Diego)
This is what the phrase 'last throes' was invented for. (Nate Silver)
