2013 Inducing groundballs is great, but Steve Edlefsen illustrates that it takes more than generating worm burners at a high rate to succeed on the mound.
2012 On September 15, Edlefsen was called upon to get Ryan Vogelsong out of a sixth-inning jam. Edlefsen got the grounder, which is what Edlefsen does, and the double play ended the inning and gave him a 3.00 ERA in the majors. It was a nice time to be Steve Edlefsen. Then he gave up a homer, a single, and a double without getting an out in the seventh inning, and he allowed two runs in his next outing, and four in the outing after that, so he had to spend the winter with the number 9.53 echoing in his inner monologue. Despite the ERA, and the pile of walks, and the almost total absence of swinging strikesówait, this was supposed to be a positive sentence . . . ah, that's right, groundballs. Edlefsen maintained a groundball rate near 60 percent after the promotion, which is how he has survived high walk rates throughout his career. It's hard to be too terrible with a groundball rate that high, though it appears Edlefsen may be up to the challenge.
2011 After climbing from High-A to Triple-A in 2009, righty reliever Steve Edlefsen successfully replicated his Triple-A performance last year at age 25, which meant good results despite too many walks thanks to his extreme ground-ball rate.
2010 Steve Edlefsen's sinker/slider combo works because of the nasty break on the slider, and could propel him into set-up work.
