2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Two Questions What is the most the Phillies can get for Joe Blanton and how much of his salary can they eat? Do you think Dominic Brown will start the year in the major leagues or will the Phillies sign a veteran bat like Jermaine Dye.
(John from Philadelphia)
Dom Brown I say starts in the majors, but isn't an everyday player until the end of May. Going with a platoon of Brown/Francisco should be fine. I don't see what Jermaine Dye could provide that Ben Francisco can't, and the latter makes like $500,000. As for Blanton, the Phillies need to wait. There is no rush to trade him. Once Pavano signs, Blanton is the most attractive trade target, a 180-200 IP pitcher with a talent level in that 4.10-4.30 ERA range. If they traded him right now I would say they eat $9 of the $17 million and get prospects we never hear from again in return. Come February I would venture to guess they eat $6 million and get a couple prospects, one of whom will have some type of impact. (Eric Seidman)
2010-05-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Would Jermaine Dye be a good fit for the Yankees at DH now that Johnson's out long-term?
(Robert from New York)
If his price has dropped and the Yankees think he's an option, sure. He looked really bad at the end of '09, so I'm not sure if he's shot. With what he was asking during the off-season, no. I'm not sure Montero's not their best option there now. (Will Carroll)
2010-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see any free agents with solid fantasy value out there? Jermaine Dye, Elijah Dukes, Pedro, am I forgetting somebody?
(dangor from New York)
John Smoltz, at least as a reliever, is somebody who can help if he's so inclined, though I guess he's content to go the broadcast route for the moment. A healthy Jarrod Washburn can certainly sponge up a useful number of innings. David Weathers is a handy reliever to have around even at his age. Carlos Delgado might still have something left once he recovers from hip surgery. Gary Sheffield is still a badass who can be a useful bench bat if so inclined, and Joe Crede can pick it at the hot corner if his back is right. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-03-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Jermaine Dye had an off-year after a good 2008. Most in the Nats Constituency seem averse to adding Dye to replace Dukes. Do you think Dye has another good year left, at least one better than Maxwell, Bernadina or Willie Harris could provide this year?
(HalfStreet from Fairfax VA)
I sort of like the idea of adding Dye to the mix. Whether it's because I don't think Harris or Bernadina should be everyday players in a corner, or because Maxwell's ability to stay healthy is far from a sure thing, or that a multi-month spin with Dye might get his career back in gear and yield something of value at the deadline... I like it. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Are there any free agents left unsigned who could be useful to contending teams?
(garethbluejays1 from Newcastle, UK)
I realize it's a well-kept secret that Johnny Damon is still looking for work. Beyond him, Russell Branyan, Rocco Baldelli, Joe Beimel, Carlos Delgado, Jermaine Dye, Pedro Martinez, Chan Ho Park, John Smoltz, Gary Sheffield and Jarrod Washburn all strike me as players who could help somebody win. Not necessarily by getting 500 PA worth of playing time, mind you, and maybe not getting enough playing time to satisfy their own estimations of their talent. Park can pitch out of my bullpen, but if he wants to start, fuggedaboutit. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jermaine Dye: worth a multi-year deal?
(Coaxette from NY, NY)
I wouldn't touch him. The uptick in walks and loss of doubles scream a player who's losing his physical skills, and from watching him he really looks slow in the field and at the plate. Huge avoid. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-10-05 16:00:00 (link to chat)The Reds dumped the pitching coach, Dick Pole. Next I'm sure they'll finish rearanging the deck chairs. AFTER THAT, what are the 3 things they should do this offseason?
(Browning Nagle from Cinti)
Willy Taveras needs to go, big time. Or at least only be used as a pinch-runner/defensive replacement. A push for a legit cleanup bat--Phillips is good but if he is your cleanup hitter...--would be good but I can ultimately see them only getting someone like Jermaine Dye, which wouldn't be awful but is certainly not a franchise changing signing. And lastly, let Stubbs, Bruce, Bailey, et al play the whole year. (Eric Seidman)
2009-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Wow, Jermaine Dye is now a snub-list snub. What does the poor guy have to do??
(JasonC23 from Huntley, IL)
Oops. Yeah, I'd say Dye belongs in that discussion as well. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-02-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Christina! Thanks for the chat. I remember hearing a while ago of a possible Chone Figgins/Jermaine Dye trade. Who do you think makes out better if that were to have gone down? Also, who pitches best this year in your estimation: Lackey, Santana, or Saunders?
(Andrew from Fayetteville, NC)
No problem Andrew, even with official A-Rod Week underway, what really matters is pitchers and catchers reporting, and here we are, getting to talk about baseball. I'd like that swap for the Angels quite a bit, even if Figgy fixes the Sox's hole in center (and in the leadoff slot). So, while there's value for both clubs, the Angels' definite need for help in the power department really would make this more of a win for them, although adding Dye to the outfield crowd would make the question of what to do with Little Sarge that much more problematic. Lastly, Santana. I like Lackey a lot, but the answer to that question is Santana every day of every week, leap year-inclusive. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for taking the time for the chat. We all know there have been substantial talks with a couple of teams regarding Jermaine Dye, but is there any information on players like Bobby Jenks, Paul Konerko, and Jim Thome, who are all possibilities to be traded this offseason?
(Ben from Work)
It appears that the White Sox are going to hang on to Jenks now and there never seemed to be much of a market for Konerko and Thome, who both have no-trade clauses. (John Perrotto)
2008-12-04 13:30:00 (link to chat)Who's the best option for the Reds to sign or trade for in left field: Milton Bradley, Jermaine Dye, Willie Harris, Delmon Young, or someone else?
(Mister Redlegs from Athens, GA)
I have a thing somewhere half-written...five FAs I wouldn't sign...Bradley's on the list. He's not durable, doesn't/can't really play the OF any longer, coming off a peak season. He was a good player at bouncing-around prices; at some 3/35 price, I'd pass. What about moving Encarnacion out there and getting a third baseman instead? Edwin's defense is that bad, no? (Joe Sheehan)
2008-10-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do I improve my offense in the off season?
(Kenny Williams from California)
Was there anything really wrong with it? It was predicated on the home run and I'd like to see more focus on some on-base guys, but I could say that about 20 teams. A healthy Carlos Quentin, a more experienced Alexei Ramirez, and hope that they can get similar performances from Jim Thome and Jermaine Dye is their big hope. That's going to be a really tough division next year and I think the Sox have more room to improve than most of the other teams there. (Will Carroll)
2008-08-18 13:00:00 (link to chat)Joe, I think it was a bit too strong to say Quentin doesn't compare to ARod in MVP voting. Maybe Arod is deserving but when you slug .582 you are in the conversation
(Neal from Joliet)
Depends on the scope of the conversation, I guess. Rodriguez has outhit Quentin by 12 points of EqA, and that's the good news. Rodriguez has positional and defensive edges. He's ahead in the advanced rate stats, and comparable in counting ones despite the missed time due to injury. Quentin, by the way, isn't clearly the best player in his own outfield--Jermaine Dye has been essentially as valuable. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)Didn't the Braves trade both Jermaine Dye and Jason Schmidt? Both of them probably could have been useful at some point.
(adamseth7 from philly)
Schmidt took a long time to come around. Dye? That's about the best ever and even he took a couple seasons to lock in. More Melvin Nieves' in my memory. (Will Carroll)
2008-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)What's Nick Johnson's status? Is he healthy enough to reclaim Washington's firstbase duties? Thanks.
(jlebeck66 from WI)
He's looked healthy early, but it's still very early. I think he'll be fine in the same way it took a couple years for Jermaine Dye to get back to his previous level. Can he take back 1B from Dmitri Young? You'd sure think so, but the 1B/COF mix is an ... interesting one there in Washington. I'm not sure how it will play out or how it affects Johnson. (Will Carroll)
