YearComment
2009 Dohmann began the year in the big leagues while Balfour was in Triple-A, but the Rays reversed those assignments in early May and Dohmann ended up buried at Durham despite pitching well. With a 92-94 mph fastball that can touch 96 and a decent slider, he's got big-league stuff, but he also has a tendency to flatten his pitches when he overthrows. Instead of toiling away in the minors again, he signed a $650,000 deal to pitch one year with the Hiroshima Carp.
2008 Unlike some of the other organizational arms who got a chance in last year's bullpen, Dohmann actually acquitted himself pretty well. He's no great shakes, mind you, but he's one of those guys with a fastball, a slider, and a pretty good idea of what to do with them, which gives him between one and three more tools than most of the dreck Tampa threw out there last year.
2007 Scott Dohmann was a throw-in in the Shealy trade because of his blazing fastball; only after you`ve seen the guy on a daily basis do you realize why his previous team was so willing to part with him: Dohmann has no secondary pitch, no command, and generally no clue on the mound. The Royals saw all of that and released him.
2006 Originally a starter, the Rockies moved him to the bullpen, hoping that he would add 3-5 mph on his fastball and benefit from working short stints rather than conserving himself for a full game. The results have been great so far, as Dohmann has struck out 270 and walked 90 in 231.2 innings since the conversion. He`s a flyball pitcher--not something that plays well in Colorado--but the Rockies will give him a shot to make the bullpen because they recognize that the peril of pitching in Coors Field is one of the classic blunders, ranking only behind a land war in Asia, and going against a Sicilian when death is on the line.
