YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Pretty much the Platonic ideal of a Twins pitcher, DeVries is right-handed, throws around 90 mph, never walks anybody, doesn’t strike out many, and lets his defense make plays behind him. That doesn’t sound like much, but for a team desperate for anyone to soak up innings, he proved a godsend until cracked ribs ended his season in September. DeVries debuted at 27 and doesn’t have any room to grow, so this was probably his high-water mark. Still, the Minnesota native and math teacher-doppelganger will be healthy and get a chance to win one of the many open spots in the rotation in spring training, where everyone will try to ignore the fact that he’s essentially Nick Blackburn, except with fly balls.
2011 Cole DeVries grew up dreaming of pitching for the Twinkies in the Twin Cities suburb of Eden Prairie, and although he was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2006 from the University of Minnesota, his outstanding curveball gives him at least an outside chance of pitching in the big leagues.
