YearComment
2003 One of those who came down with a sudden case of old last year, after coming back from Tommy John surgery. De los Santos has good stuff, and heíll go on as long as his control holds out. If his command and movement are back, thereís no reason he canít be the same pitcher he was before the surgery, or possibly better. If his K rate perks back up, heíll be fine. If not, he could be in Triple-A to stay pretty quickly.
2001 More than any other major-league pitcher last year, Valerio de los Santos had his numbers ruined by a pair of lousy outings. He was bombed for nine hits--including five home runs--and eight runs in 3 2/3 innings on April 9. On May 21, he was left in to absorb eight runs in two-thirds of an inning. Take away those two games and he had a 3.38 ERA in 69 1/3 innings with 57 hits allowed, 28 walks, and 69 strikeouts. As a reverse-platooner with no breaking pitch, heís horribly miscast as a situational left-hander but has good potential as a setup man or even a starter. The back injury that cost him most of 1999 might have been the best thing that could have happened as far as his arm was concerned. Now he hasnít been overworked in five years. An excellent sleeper.
2000 He opened the year in the major-league bullpen but missed most of the season after surgery to repair a bulging disc in his back. He still doesn't have an off-speed pitch or change speeds well with his good fastball/forkball combination, but he could be a very effective reliever. He gave up #60 to Sosa in 1998, while Bere gave up Sammy's 60th in 1999. I guess they can't get enough history in Milwaukee.
1998 Throws the best fastball in the organization, mixed with that rarity, the left-handed splitter. He was pushed past the California League up to El Paso, and didnít get killed despite his youth and lack of experience. Hopefully, heíll get pushed up to Louisville, where he may be moved to the pen to take a long relief role similar to Arthur Rhodesí.
1997 Pitched 165 innings for Beloit last year, and probably another 50-100 in other leagues around the continent. He pitched well, but how long can he hold up? Supposedly has a great fastball and forkball, so his arm will probably implode in New Orleans in May of 1998.
