2013 Fireballing reliever Frankie De La Cruz is back with the Brewers after spending a year in Iowa and Taiwan; with little control of his high-90s heater, he’s a bullpen option, but not a particularly good one.
2012 De La Cruz was formerly a flamethrowing Tigers prospect whose struggles with control and finding a third pitch made it all but a foregone conclusion he'd end up in the bullpen. He's travelled far—including a stop in Japan—to again find himself a starting prospect. He still lacks a quality breaking ball, but has harnessed his control enough to suggest he'll have a career.
2010 Eulogio De La Cruz is living proof that a pitcher can be blessed with a 100 mph fastball but still be unable to succeed in the majors, but the absence of control or a second pitch has him leaving for Japan to follow in Marc Kroon's footsteps with the Yakult Swallows.
2009 De la Cruz's numbers trail behind his stuff, but that's because his high-velocity fastball runs flat, while his curve is often thrown out of the strike zone, making him less effective against more advanced hitters. Last year was no exception; he does not have the pitches to become an effective starter, and will instead have to harness the ones he has in a relief role.
2008 If you squint, you can almost see Francisco Rodriguez in de la Cruz, a small Dominican righty with high-90s heat and a sharp breaking ball. Rodriguez gets more movement and velocity, however, which is a difference worth tens of millions of dollars over time. De la Cruz was part of the big Marlins deal and, given the situation in Florida, could end up as their top righty reliever this season.
2007 De la Cruz`s strikeout numbers have been merely average, but it`s not for lack of stuff. He gets rave reviews for three pitches--a heater that stays in the high-90s, as well as his curve and change--but he has had command problems. Sometimes pitchers like that have trouble leveraging their arsenal into Ks because they`re often working from behind in the count. This profile would ordinarily be targeted for the bullpen, where it`s easier to maintain consistent mechanics, but de la Cruz`s numbers improved once he was moved to the rotation mid-season, and that`s where he`ll start 2007.
2005 De la Cruz hits triple digits on the radar gun but otherwise has little to recommend him, as his fastball is straight, his command is poor, his build is slight, and he's yet to develop a useful secondary pitch. We haven't done a comprehensive study on how pitchers like this progress but it's a safe guess that the success rate is pretty low. Most fundamentally, it's hard to see how useful 100-mph heat can be if it can't even be leveraged into an above-average strikeout rate in the Midwest League.
