2007 DeJean injured his shoulder right out of the gate and underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery in mid-June. He`s expected to be ready for spring training, but the Rockies did not pick up his $1.5 million option. DeJean has made it known that he wants to retire as a Rocky, marking him as a man of singularly low ambition.
2006 If the bullpen is supposed to be a priority for 2006, why are the Rockies wasting $1.15 million on Mike DeJean? Beyond the 21 innings he threw for the Mets in 2004, he`s been an utterly forgettable pitcher the last three years, he`s 35, and he still lets lefties crank instant souvenirs. The other arms the Rockies have assembled to audition for the 2006 pen aren`t exactly a who`s-who list of great relievers, but at least they`re cheap.
2005 DeJean made three appearances after a line drive fractured his right tibia on Aug. 19, one of the better tough-guy stories of the season. Up until the injury, he'd been very good in his two months with the Mets, who picked him up for Karim Garcia after the Orioles lost interest. He's expected to be healthy in 2005, and will be the Mets' top set-up man, getting ground balls and walking a few too many guys to be really good.
2003 His encounter session with Jerry Royster was a nice little exclamation point to a lost season in Cheeseland. His ERA has consistently been lower than one would expect based on his peripheral numbers. Heís under contract next year for $1.7 million, because thereís nothing a team going nowhere needs more than an adequate, expensive closer.
2002 DeJean was picked up in the Juan Acevedo trade along with Mark Leiter, a deal in which two teams desperate for right-handed relief depth exchanged some. It sort of worked out. Liberated from pitching at altitude, DeJean was healthy and successful in long relief. Kane Davis had a good year for the Rockies, while Acevedo, who was supposed to be the best player in the deal, flopped. In terms of middle-relief subcultures, thereís little youíll find here that wasnít already written in Rich Bordi: A Life.
2001 Considering he was bouncing back from a 1999 season derailed by bone chips in his elbow (they were removed over the winter), Mike DeJean had a decent season as a mop-up man. He was once touted as a closer of the future, but now heís got to hope that he lucks into the kinds of contracts that have been handed out to Russ Springer and Doug Henry.
2000 Mike DeJean missed the end of the 1998 season after breaking his hand hitting his locker in frustration. I hate it when good players do silly things and get themselves injured, but since DeJean isnít all that good, I guess I donít have an issue with him. In 1999, he gave up the home run, the walk and the stolen base much more readily than before. Heís still young, heís still got the great forkball and he should be back to normal in 2000. With Dave Veres gone to St. Louis and Curtis Leskanic in Milwaukee, he could pick up some saves.
1999 It sounds heretical, but DeJean may be more valuable in Colorado than in many other locales. He boasts a deadly forkball and a heavy fastball, both of which work pretty well in thin air. DeJean isn't going to overpower anyone, so I'd be surprised if Leyland gave him much closing duty, but he's likely to continue on this path of success in middle relief.
1998 Seemed to have a breakthrough season, getting lots and lots of groundballs and not walking anybody. Pitched particularly well at Coors Field. The low strikeout rate is a cause for concern; DeJean would seem to be working with a very thin margin between success and failure. Heís 50 bad innings away from the Northern League.
1997 Probably no worse than a lot of teamsí #9 or #10 pitcher. On the cusp of the go/no go decision as far as baseball is concerned. Hard to develop a lot as a pitcher in the PCL, except in terms of personal psychoses.
1996  The Colorado farm system is so devoid of prospects that guys like this start to look good. I mean, none of the authors of this book got together and talked about word limits for essays or prospects ex ante; Chris Kahrl was writing 1700-word lead-ins, and I was limiting myself to 700 or so. It's hardly fair, but for the sake of equity, we need to fill up the Colorado player comment areas with something, and it gets really monotonous (and terse) to just write "What a stiff" 80 times. So you end up with Yankee castoffs looking pretty attractive. Hey. Mike DeJean. Under 28 years old. Walks less than five per nine IP. UmÖ Hell. I guess I'll wax on about Jayhawk Owens. That way, at least the park effects work in my favor.
