BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2005 The Red Sox sure do a good job of collecting lots of the same kind of player, don't they? Daubach played well in Pawtucket last year, but he doesn't bring anything to the table that the Sox didn't already have in spades. As injury replacements go, he's nice to have around, but his chances of getting back to the majors with the Sox are marginal.
2003 Over the last four years, Daubach has given the Red Sox average production at a bargain price. He is still a useful role-player, but in arbitration, he was likely to win an award more appropriate for a full-time starter. The acquisition of Jeremy Giambi, a similar player, was the death knell for Daubach’s career with the Red Sox.
2002 Daubach’s consistent counting stats mask some variances in his output, with 2001 ranking in between his previous two seasons. Daubach was one of Duquette’s smartest signings. Obtained for nothing as a former replacement player with a Quadruple-A label, Daubach has outproduced Tino Martinez over the last three years for about $15 million less. However, just as they found him in the pile of first baseman, the Sox should now go back to the pile to find another one like him rather than go to arbitration.
2001 He dropped off enough from his excellent rookie season that Jimy Williams started using him less down the stretch, which didn’t do anything to shake Brian Daubach’s post-April slump. Daubach’s shoulder injury in the Tampa Bay mêlée in late August didn’t help, as he barely hit at all during September. He’s better than he showed in 2000 but not as good as he was the year before. That gives him one more season of usefulness before he hits arbitration.
2000 Daubach was one of the great stories of 1999. A 27-year-old hitter who was released by the Marlins after a great 1998, he replaced Mo Vaughn at first base and out-hit him for most of the year. He's probably not going to get better than this, and the way he looked in September (.173/.246/.327) makes you wonder if the league has figured him out. He's very patient at the plate, leading the team in pitches seen per plate appearance.
1999 The Marlins’ Minor League Player of the Year, Daubach is a minor league vet with a proven power stroke. The Marlins have tried moving him to the outfield, where he might stand a chance as a pinch-hitter and part-timer. Released after the season, expected to sign in Japan.
1998 Daubach is 27 and a minor league free-agent refugee from the Mets. He’s had back-to-back fine minor league seasons and bats from the left side, where the Marlins are still lacking. With Conine and Daulton set free, the Marlins are suddenly in the market for a first baseman. I’m not saying he’ll get 500 at-bats this year, but if he’s going to get a shot, this is his best chance.
1997 He’s made slow progress, generally wiping out in his first exposure to new leagues, catching up later. That habit doesn’t usually lead to success in the majors.
1996  A first baseman who would be outhit by most shortstops. Not worth taking a gamble on.
