BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
1998 After a fine 1996 season in New Haven, Velazquez looked like the best of the Rockies’ prospects. One tough season of Triple-A ball later, his future is not so certain. Velazquez slipped in most aspects of the hitting game, most importantly in his selectivity. He should not be considered a washout yet, as he’s still only 22 years old, his defense remains solid and he has the same tools he had a year ago.
1997 This is probably my favorite Rockies prospect, which is something like having a favorite episode of “Who’s the Boss?” Edgard has moved up steadily, gotten slightly better at all facets of the game each year and hasn’t made any bad tradeoffs along the way. A lot of times, a guy’s average might jump up at the expense of his power, or his selectivity might jump at the expense of batting average. Velazquez sure looks like a great hitter to me, both in person and on paper. Helton will hit for a higher average and get more press, but I think Velazquez will be the better offensive player.
