2003 Cunnane does all the things you think should work, keeping the ball on the ground, striking people out, showing good control. But in the majors, he seems to flounder in these 11th pitcher roles. Lefties hammer him, and he falls apart with men on base. Will he finally become something? People have been asking the same thing about Keanu Reeves for twice as long.
2002 How often does a guy get sent down as he's finally shaking off a bad start, just because his cumulative numbers still look terrible? Cunnane was beginning to pitch well in late June and July, but because he had been so awful before then, it was hard for the Brewers to see the trees for the forest. Cunnaneís fastball is good but has no movement. In the Ď80s, heíd have been the kind of guy to whom Roger Craig would teach a forkball, set him loose, and watch him blow out his elbow after a great year and a half. Cunnane signed with the Cubs as a minor-league free agent.
2001 He had another chance to stick with the Padres last year and didnít quite get it done. Although he finished the season strong, with a 3.60 ERA in September, Will Cunnaneís fastball is probably too straight to ever make him a top-shelf reliever. Still, heís not a head case, and with his willingness to go after hitters, he wonít walk in the tying run. Thatís got to be worth something.
2000 Cunnane posted a microscopic 0.98 ERA as the closer for Las Vegas in 1999. No, he wasnít really that good, but his strikeout rate skyrocketed and heís in the Padresí plans for 2000. Heís always had good stuff, but his 95 mph heater started getting more press this year after his early success.
1999 A Rule V pick from the Marlins, Cunnane lost most of 1998 to injury. He's been a prospect forever, but he's still deserving of the tag. He's suffered from a bit of wildness since he arrived in San Diego, but he could be a factor in the rotation or the pen if he keeps his walks under control.
1998 Cunnane was a Rule V draftee from the Marlins, so he spent the season in San Diego. He wasnít terrible, but heís not ready for the majors yet and should start the season in Las Vegas. Pitched much better in relief, so Cunnane might be converted exclusively to relief in 1998.
1997 A 165-pound experiment that should tell us whether a pitcher can survive in the big leagues with not even a hint of a fastball. Cunnane is polished like an apple on a teacherís desk, but for all his control he canít throw his fastball past Rookie League hitters. We should all root for him, because thereís a little bit of Cunnane in all of us. Picked in the Rule V draft by San Diego.
1996  Cunnane was signed as an undrafted free agent and still has his skeptics, because he doesn't throw very hard. Still, posting the lowest ERA in organized baseball in 1994 will attract attention. Even if his velocity doesn't improve, though, a 22-year-old who throws strikes as consistently as he does has to be considered a good prospect. He's wafer-thin and the Marlins are desperately trying to get him to put on some weight.
