2013 Eleven years after beginning his professional career, six years after playing in the All-Star Futures Game, and two years after fading from the major-league scene, Cruz went from organizational fodder to folk hero. He tore up Albuquerque, then arrived in Los Angeles on July 2, just before Dee Gordon went down, shifted to third base upon Hanley Ramirez's arrival, and hit well enough not only to maintain his spot but to become a crowd favorite. Cruz doesn't have much patience at the plate, but he's a contact hitter with enough gap power and versatility to give himself a chance to stick around if the hits fall.
2011 If you heard the name Luis Cruz but didn't know who he was, you might very well guess that he's an anonymous Triple-A shortstop with a sub-.300 OBP who will never hit enough to stick in the majors, and you’d be right.
2010 Defensive versatility are Cruz's strengths, as he is very good with the glove at both middle infield positions, above-average at third base, and passable in the outfield. That may be a plus at the very bottom of a very deep bench, but the absence of any sense of what the wooden thing they hand him in his non-fielding playing time is for undermines even that. He'll have to hit to have a career notable for anything other than its brevity, and he'll get his next shot at it with the Brewers, who claimed him on waivers for reasons that defy easy explanation.
2009 Luis Cruz made it to the majors last September in his ninth pro season; he won't hit enough to be a regular, but is good enough defensively that he could carve out a career as a bench player.
2007 Like Blum, Cruz is a good defender at either short or second, and he has a little pop in his bat. After he struggled at Mobile at the start of 2005, the Padres loaned him to the Mexico City Red Devils in May rather than ride it out and see if he`d adjust to Double-A pitching. Maybe it was the home cooking (Cruz was born in Navojoa, Mexico), but the move seemed to give him the confidence to make the jump in his second try at BayBears baseball. Despite taking the long way around, he`s still quite young, and should be in the picture as an alternative to Blum whenever Khalil Greene`s latest injury forces him out of the lineup.
