2003 After leading the minor leagues in home runs, youíd think the Cardinals could have found a way to cram Cruz onto their postseason roster. Instead, they wanted to have Cairo, Wilson Delgado, and Mike Difelice all present and accounted for. You never know when youíre going to need a third catcher in the postseason, after all. Of course, you canít pinch-hit for your starting catcher and keep Marrero in the outfield and use that third catcher if you donít have anyone to pinch-hit with in the first place. At this point, Cruz would push Tino for the job in a fair fight, not that oneís coming.
2000 Heís no different from Brian Daubach, Matt Stairs or, for that matter, Roberto Petagine. Cruz is another minor-league slugger who is merely an opportunity away from putting up some good numbers in the majors. After a 1999 ruined by injuries, he's not likely to get another chance in Pittsburgh.
1996  Don't be fooled: the bump in walks is mostly the 15 intentionals he inspired. Another failed high draft pick from the Tigers' dark period.
