YearComment
2017 Due to publishing agreements, the 2017 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2017 book (available in hardcopy, and soon e-book and Kindle).
2016 Crockett was the Indians' designated Columbus-to-Cleveland-shuttle lefty, optioned thrice to the minors during the 2015 season (April, June and July). In between his travels up and down I-71, Crockett delivered a fastball-slider combo from a low-three-quarters arm slot. While he's not an extreme specialist like other funk-armed southpaws (hey there, Randy Choate!), he still hasn't found a knack for retiring righties, who posted an .803 OPS against him over the past two seasons. Even though he was a college closer, Crockett's likely long-term role is shuffling up and down the Ohio corridor, trying to induce groundball outs in middle-leverage situations and waiting to run out of minor-league options.
2015 The college left-hander made his MLB debut at Progressive Field less than one year after the Indians selected him in the fourth round of the 2013 draft. He relies on deception to increase his effectiveness, with a modest fastball that averaged 90 mph last season but which features good movement to encourage weak contact. He also has a sweeping breaker with curveball velocity but the two-plane trajectory of a slider. The former college closer may lack the raw stuff typically associated with the stopper role, but he is quickly carving a place for himself as a lefty specialist and mop-up reliever. Crockett's delivery starts with a normal leg lift and a slight lean to the third-base side during his stride, but he suddenly drops down to a near-submarine level after foot strike, finishing with a sidearm slot and a release point that falls into Pat Neshek territory.
2014 A former teammate of Mariners’ second overall pick Danny Hultzen at the University of Virginia, Crockett—who was drafted in the fourth round two years later—now stands a once-unfathomable chance of beating Hultzen to the majors. While Hultzen suffered a serious shoulder injury Crockett breezed through the lower minors to reach Double-A in his first professional season. The Newport News native boasts outstanding command, which plays up his low-90s fastball and sweeping slider, both delivered from a low-three-quarters release. He is at least a lefty specialist with a chance to be a quality set-up man, and he might reach the majors before the year is out.
