2013 Taken one pick before Chase Headley in the second round of the 2005 draft, Costanzo is a third baseman who doesn't hit for enough power to offset his inability to make contact. He has hit more than 15 homers once in eight seasons (2007 at Double-A) and owns a career .430 SLG in the minors, which is a tough sell when you strike out every fourth plate appearance. He showed nothing in his cameo of a big-league debut and may not get many more shots. At least his name isn't Costanza, so you can't call him "Can't Stand Ya."
2009 Costanzo was a popular guy last offseason; the Astros got him from the Phillies in the Lidge deal, and then the Orioles got him in the Tejada trade. Unfortunately, the 2007 power burst that made him desirable evaporated as quickly as gasoline on a blacktop road in August. We'd normally say something about Norfolk being a tough park to hit in, but the fact is that Costanzo hit pretty much the same at home (.263/.337/.386) as on the road (.259/.328/.405); the strikeouts, not the park, are what's holding him back. He was trying to learn to catch in the spring, an accomplishment that would certainly raise his value, but it never translated into any games played. The Orioles left him unprotected in the Rule 5 draft, but no one bit; what a difference a year makes.
2008 Born in Philadelphia and the Phillies' top pick in 2005, Costanzo made a great story as the organization's Third Baseman of the Future. That's over now, as he was traded twice over the winter, going first to Houston in the Lidge deal, then to Baltimore as part of the package that netted Miguel Tejada. Costanzo has a ton of power, but has been held back by his Brobdingnagian strikeout rate and high error totals at the hot corner. If he can fix the latter, he could be enough of a hitter to start, but if has to move to a less challenging position, his future will be limited.
2007 A lifetime Phillie fan with the good fortune to have been drafted by them in the first round of the 2005 draft, Costanzo struggled through the first half of the season before finishing strong at Clearwater. Like Welinson Baez, he`s a good, strong-armed defender at third; whereas Baez was nearly a pitcher, Costanzo really was one, at least in college. Offense is the problem; he`s been a total bust against lefties in two years as a pro, and he hasn`t hit righties enough to make up for it.
