2007 He`s not really an effective situational lefty anymore, just a guy with a pretty good move to first, but the Reds saw that shiny ERA and just had to have him. He parlayed waiving his 10-and-5 rights into a guaranteed $2.25 million for 2007 and an option for `08, securing his faltering career a little while longer. He`s now the occupant of the Chris Hammond chair in the pen. You know, the one with the ejector seat.
2006 After two surprisingly effective seasons as a lefty gunslinger who could retire all comers, Cormier`s Age 38 campaign was filled with a succession of minor injuries--shoulder, hip, back, foot--although none was serious enough to land him on the DL. However, the ailments badly bruised Cormier`s pride as well as his ERA muscle. He succeeded with his average stuff in 2003-04 because he hit his spots, threw strikes, and kept the ball down. That he can regain his fine command in 2006 and stay healthy at 39 is not a sound bet.
2005 Timing is everything when it comes to contract extensions, and the Phillies pulled the trigger on Cormier's $3 million option—the legacy of an irrationally exuberant deal signed in November 2000—after he posted a stellar 2003 ERA that was out of line with both his past performances and his peripheral stats. They were probably disappointed with his performance, but it was right in line with what our projection system expected. Cormier, who has won more big league games than any other native of Moncton, New Brunswick, keeps the ball down well enough to contribute for another couple seasons, but the Phillies' two-year, $5.25 million contract extension was too much.
2003 Yet another example of why signing relievers to long-term contracts is foolish. Cormier struggled all year long, losing his role as the principle left-handed setup man in large part because lefty batters started hitting him better than righties. Cormier’s still under contract through next year, so unless the Phillies break form, he’ll take up roster space again.
2002 Cormier wasn’t the outright disaster that Bottalico was, but he hardly provided a good return on investment for the Phils. He wasn’t especially effective against left-handed batters, and he has never been durable enough to be anything more than a specialist. Good left-handers should cost a little more than good right-handed relievers, but not this much. The Phillies need to focus on using their money to fill more critical spots on the roster.
2001 Rheal Cormier was moderately less effective in 2000 than in 1999, as Williams relied on him for more long stints (including six of 30 or more pitches). Before his comeback, Cormier had missed two years due to injuries. Given the workload his fragile arm has carried, further decline should be expected. He's covered if that happens: the Phillies gave him a three-year deal.
2000 After surgery wiped out two years, Cormier came back as both a specialist (29 appearances of less than an inning) and a middle reliever (31 appearances of one to three innings), which made him more valuable than as either alone. He held left-handed hitters to a .198 average and a 547 OPS. The Red Sox have picked up a $2 million option for 2000, and he's expected to be an important part of the pen.
1998 Spent the season on the DL, then filed for free agency. That’s not the best way to win a big contract. Cormier didn’t strike out many batters in his prime, and may have a hard time getting back to an effective level in the majors.
1997 Well they finally got their man. No star potential, but has been very effective for several years by letting his fielders work for him. The Expos have good team defense, and left-handed groundball pitchers don’t hit their prime until their 30s. Should continue to be effective indefinitely.
1996  I really like Cormier, and think he could thrive as a San Francisco Giant. Anywhere there's a pitchers' park with a good defense behind him, this guy could break out big. Of course, that's true for all pitchers, but I think it's particularly true for Cormier. Not a Scientologist. Sent to Montreal for Cordero, where he's in the 5th starter mix.
