2003 As an example of the kind of player that the Cardinals could have had on their postseason roster, someone who can play third with grace and short in a pinch, and who can do a wee bit of mashing, we present Mike Coolbaugh. A long swing probably keeps him from being the kind of guy you want on your bench, since he probably wouldn’t cash in many pinch-hitting opportunities, but if something bad happens to your starting third baseman or shortstop, who do you want in the lineup? A second baseman who can’t do more than paste a single, or somebody who can actually start? Coolbaugh’s too old to have a real future. In an infield where you needed to have a spot-starter at least twice a week, he’d be handy, but that isn’t the Cardinals.
2002 Like a lot of minor-league journeymen hauled in by the Brewers lately, Coolbaugh was touted by Davey Lopes as somebody he liked. Of course, Lopes really only liked him in principle. He didn’t like Coolbaugh enough to give him a shot once Ron Belliard and Tyler Houston were out of action. After the year, Coolbaugh signed a minor-league deal with the Cardinals, who might give him a look at third base in their crazed drive to put Albert Pujols anywhere other than at his natural position. He’s a fine replacement for Craig Paquette.
1998 Third baseman with no future in this organization, but he’s not appreciably less valuable than Ed Sprague. Very soft hands on defense, has some pop from the right side and might still have some sort of a major league career. Very active in his protests against the Outback Steakhouse chain for their failure to make an acceptable house dressing.
1997 Although he shouldn’t be confused with longtime journeyman Scott Coolbaugh, Mike’s not a whole lot better, beating up on the Florida State League at age 24. He also played a lot of third base and DH, his best position.
1996  Reasonably good defender, and given the lack of a better thirdbaseman in AA or above in the Rangers chain, Coolbaugh has a good chance of winning the Oklahoma City hot corner to himself. Snatched from Toronto in the AAA portion of the Rule V draft, so he doesn't have to be returned.
