2015 Brody Colvin was once a top 100 prospect across the industry, but the 24-year-old was released after a disastrous start to the 2014 season—actually, four disastrous starts. It usually takes more than two years for a prospect to fall completely off the radar, but this may well be it for Colvin.
2014 Brody Colvin has the stuff to compete at the big-league level, but he walked 54 and struck out 36 with Double-A Reading.
2013 More maybe than yes at this point, Colvin labored through an uneven 2012, including buckling under the pressure of a promotion to Double-A in late July. Inconsistent mechanics spur his troubles: His command and control have regressed every year as a pro, resulting in an ugly 10 percent walk rate for his career. He has swing-and-miss stuff when his fastball, curveball, and changeup are all working, but those instances are rare. The chorus of scouts and analysts who had Colvin’s future in the bullpen from the jump is growing louder, though for now there's no reason for the Phillies not to keep working with him as a starter.
2012 Colvin was the biggest disappointment among the Phillies' top prospects, as his turn in the usually pitcher-friendly Florida State League alternated between injured and disappointing. Placed on the disabled list in April with a back injury, Colvin had lost his swing-and-miss ability when he returned. He still generated plenty of groundballs, some of which went for hits out of Colvin’s control, but he never got into the groove many expected after a strong 2010. Enough of his season was beset by injury that significant upside remains, as evidenced by an eight-inning, nine-strikeout game in July in which he allowed just three hits. Nevertheless, his stock needs rehabilitation, and his star has been eclipsed by those of Biddle and Trevor May.
2011 The Phillies worked hard to get Colvin in the system; after selecting him in the seventh round of the 2009 draft, they had to pry him away from a firm commitment to pitch for LSU. Going the extra yard (and tossing a $900,000 bonus his way) has started to pay off, as Colvin had the strongest finish of any pitcher in the system. He posted a 2.40 ERA in 45 innings with a 40/11 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his final 10 starts of the season. He has a big frame that could allow him to bump up his low-90s velocity as he develops, and he supplements the fastball with a power downer curve that serves as an out pitch. The biggest knock against Colvin is his delivery, which has a lot of moving parts, but he throws downhill and appeared to drink from the cup of repeatability at season’s end. This season, he’ll move up to High-A Clearwater, where he’ll be a few years younger than the competition. Colvin may take a while to develop, but his upside now seems higher than it did when he was drafted.
