BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2011 Roman Colon, another Brave turned Royal, pitched all of four innings for the organization before deciding to take his meager talents to South Korea.
2010 The Royals have so many former Braves pitchers that it wouldn't be a surprise to see Gene Garber on the rubber one of these days. The Royals acquired Colon in 2007 after an off-field incident made him persona non grata with the Tigers. He put up some decent numbers in Omaha in 2009 before receiving a call to join the ailing bullpen. He was ineffective in general terms (his 4.82 Fair Run Average was below average) and effective by Royals standards (it was the third-best in the Royals pen). There is little to recommend him—indeed, there may be less to recommend him—over any of 100 other relievers looking for a big-league job.
2009 Following him in line is Roman Colon, another former fledgling Bravo who failed to hatch, and has since bounced to the Tigers and Royals.
2007 Colon had surgery in November to repair a herniated disk in his neck. That sounds scarier than it really is in baseball terms; he`s expected to be back for the start of the season, though he might need extended spring training. On the mound, he`s had trouble missing bats with his fastball, but there are 30 pitching coaches in the league who will tell you they can turn him into a plus reliever. His stature and overall approach are reminiscent of Antonio Alfonseca.
2006 Answer to the question, `What did Caesar digest his food with?` and also `What does it sound like when you order your twenty-third rum and cola?` Colon was meant to be the reward for trading Kyle Farnsworth to the Braves, but the Tigers weren`t happy with the early returns. A non-prospect for years, Colon`s development coincided with a turn to full-time relief, which added about 5 mph to his fastball. The Tigers, like the Braves, have thought about moving him back to starting. The Tigers say he`ll be competing for the fifth starter`s spot in the spring, and will quickly discover that he should stay in relief.
2005 Least likely nickname for Roman (accent, second syllable) Colon, should he become famous enough to merit one: Bildungsroman. In any event, this particular novel of education, after some fits and starts, fared well in the low minors as a starter and transitioned deftly to relief work over the last season-and-a-half. Last year, he was named Richmond's pitcher of the year and also pitched well in 19 innings in Atlanta. He's a good bet to win a spot in the Atlanta bullpen coming out of spring training.

13-man staffs are an abomination. BTW, the Royals designated Roman Colon for assignment today and called up Josh Rupe, another Texas castoff. Bullpen problem solved! (Bradford Doolittle)
