DateQuestionAnswer
2014-07-22 15:00:00 (link to chat)Michael Choice had a pretty horrendous year in the majors and now is hitting again in AAA (PCL). Was he just rushed because of the cacophony of Rangers injuries or has he taken a step back in scouts' eyes?
(Pat from FL)
A bit of both? Choice definitely has some holes in his game, his swing specifically, but could be a second division OF, and contribute to a good team. He's gotten really long, and gave away a lot of ABs. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-07-09 15:00:00 (link to chat)I don't know much you've seen Michael Choice, but I have a theory that his noisy front leg is causing him all sorts of problems including a visible loss of balance when he swings at pitches on the outer third. Thoughts? Can a guy with his profile contribute even league average plate production with that kind of timing mechanism?
(Jay from PHX)
I don't like it but you don't know if you take away that stride if he falls off a cliff even harder. That would be a change for the offseason. Physical gifts are there. (Ryan Parker)
2014-03-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospect delivers a Puig-like explosion this season? Willing to stash till mid June if there is some bang for my patience in the second half. Top targets are Baez Taveras Springer Polanco and perhaps Buxton but he seems a year away.
(Travis Fryman's Mitt from Pontiac, MI)
I really love Springer, but I think he could be up in May. Taveras has to get healthy first. However, Puig was 79th on the BP 101 last year, so if you're looking for someone deeper, lemme throw Wilmer Flores and Michael Choice out there as potential breakouts. (Paul Sporer)
2014-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Mike Moustakas .... primed for an Alex Gordon-like emergence or more of the same frustration? Do you like Michael Choice in the Texas OF picture?
(dianagram from VORGville)
Moustakas was so so bad last season. How do you look at his stats and expect him to be an above average player? The Royals can't (and won't) give up on him yet, so that's a good thing in that we get to find out the answer to this novel, but wow yuck.

As for Choice, Texas is a great place to hit, but where's he going to play? Rios, Choo, and Martin in the outfield doesn't leave much room. He can't platoon with Rios because they're both right-handed and you don't give the money to Choo that the Rangers did and then platoon him. So, fourth outfielder? Depth is good though. It's a long season. (Matthew Kory)
2014-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat)It feels like nearly everything clicked for the A's the last two years. They've made a lot of moves this offseason, but it doesn't feel like they've improved. Kazmir in, Colon out. Sign Punto to be what, a utility infielder? Johnson in, Balfour out. Gentry in, Smith out (and Michael Choice traded). And of course, the Rangers have gotten a lot better. Do you see the A's contending for the division again?
(Jon from San Francisco)
I do think the A's will still contend. They have a good roster and they'll piece together a competitive club that will hang around. (Mark Anderson)
2013-12-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you predict any prospects getting trades this winter?
(Chris from Phoenix)
Yes. Michael Choice. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which do you think will have the best career? Marcell Ozuna, Jake Marisnick, Michael Choice, Khris Davis? And can you rank the 4 for career? Thanks!
(TheKernel from Pasadena)
I would take Marisnick.

Marisnick, Choice, Ozuna, Davis (Jason Parks)
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)do yo think Michael Choice is good enough to be a winning piece in Arlington this season?
(liltroy17 from ag-town)
I'm not sure what a winning piece looks like, but if it means he develops into a starter, I will agree. He might not make a lot of contact, but he can hit for power, has some on-base ability, and can handle LF. I liked the trade for the Rangers. Smart move. (Jason Parks)
2013-10-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Michael Choice can crack the opening day roster for the A's? If so, what kind of season could you see him having? Thanks Matt!
(Mike from The Couch)
I think he could. It depends on whether or not there's an open spot in the outfield. How long is Josh Reddick out? Do the A's pick up Coco Crisp's option? Do they trade Cespedes and if so do they get an outfielder in return? (Matthew Kory)
2013-10-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)If you were Oakland, who stays and goes for 2014? Some choices are obvious -- Chris Young and Kurt Suzuki are gone. Grant Balfour and Bartolo Colon are probably not affordable. Brett Anderson, Seth Smith, and Josh Reddick are all non-tender candidates, though Smith and Reddick could be back because it doesn't look like Michael Choice is ready. How do they fix the middle of the infield? Jed Lowrie isn't going to put up this type of offense to make up for that poor of a glove and Eric Sogard and Albert Callaspo -- just, no. The Coliseum hides the total mediocre state of the A's rotation.
(Dave from Chicago)
Great question. Agree on Young and Suzuki. Balfour will probably price himself out of Oakland, a team that has no problem with a revolving door of closers. I think that Reddick sticks around, unless his homer counts exorbitantly drive up the price in his first year of arbitration. It will be interesting to see what Colon wants contractually, and the A's could easily bow out if he wants a multi-year deal. There is no way that the A's pay $8 million for Anderson next year, so his option will be declined, but it will be interesting to see if he re-signs on a one-year deal to re-establish his value. Coco Crisp will probably be taken up on his $7.5 million option, given his somewhat unique blend of speed and power in CF (as well as his clubhouse appeal). The A's like the power that Lowrie offers in the middle of the diamond, and their backup options are less than inspiring (Nakajima has turned out to be a waste of $6.5 million).

The A's pitching succeeds in many ways that are tough to see. Yes, the Coliseum and its immense foul territory certainly help, but the A's have an excellent system in place for pitcher development. They emphasize balance, posture, and pitch repetition - and they eschew the slide step! So they earn the benefit of the doubt when it comes to developing pitchers from within and identifying which arms to bring into the system.

2013-09-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you have the Vimeo plus account or just the regular one?
(Hank from Rochester)
Plus. If any of you haven't seen my Vimeo page before, check it out: https://vimeo.com/user3214266/videos

Tons of prospect videos going back a few years (I upgraded to a much better camera prior to spring training 2012). Sometimes I like going back and looking at the older videos, like Michael Choice hitting a double off Hoby Milner in college: https://vimeo.com/11097416 (Jason Cole)
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you are trading major league talent for prospects do you want bulk or elite. As example (from A's): Addison Russell or Sonny Gray, Michael Choice, Grant Green and Jemile Weeks.
(hknova from Hong Kong)
I wouldn't trade for Grant Green. Give me the high ceiling guys; players with impact potential. You don't fly flags because of fringy talent. Impact players make impact teams. (Jason Parks)
2013-04-30 12:00:00 (link to chat)Over/under: Michael Choice makes two All-Star games?
(JoshuaGB from Chicago)
I was thisclose to saying over then I started flipping around B-Ref pages and noticed that Carlos Pena made one AS team, Adam Dunn made two, and Pat Burrell made zero. Do three-true outcome guys get underrated in AS voting? Is it the streaky thing? These are unanswered questions that force me into saying under. (R.J. Anderson)
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your take on Michael Choice's roller coaster season last year? Is ready for a MLB role?
(Matt from Chicago)
Not ready yet; has major league potential (Jason Parks)
2012-10-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)The A's outfield has fewer future openings than I expected, but will Michael Choice force his way into the discussion despite the injury setback?
(myshkin from Santa Clara)
Yes, Coco Crisp's contract expires after next year (though the A's do hold a team option) and I would expect to see Cespedes shift to center field and Choice slide into left when the latter is ready for the big leagues. (Bradley Ankrom)
2012-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Looking forward to my prospect draft next season. Taijuan Walker v. Archie Bradley. Xander Bogaerts v. Javier Baez, Michael Choice v. Rymer Liriano. Who'd you take in those matchups?
(Joe from Bellvue)
Bradley, Bogaerts, Liriano. Walker is the wildcard for me because he could be the very good version of Edwin Jackson we saw a few years ago or the one that has been around most other seasons. (Jason Collette)
