2012 Like a drunk college student jumping out of the hot tub and into a cold pool, Chavez must have shrieked with shock when he landed in the Southern League after a massive 2010 season in High Desert. If you squint a little, you could possibly see his control of the strike zone improved as the season went on, and he did manage to hold his own against the league's right-handed pitchers. But the Venezuelan with a big arm (18 assists in 2011) and big power is now, after his A-Ball breakout, back to being just a bag of tools. The good news is that, even if he has to repeat Double-A, he's only a hot month or two away from a promotion to the Pacific Coast League, a new hot tub to splash around in.
2011 Like Alex Liddi before him, Chavez will have to head to Double-A to prove that he’s more than a High Desert mirage after cracking 32 big flies in the Cal League homer haven. The Venezuelan managed a .352 ISO at home, in contrast to a .173 mark on the road, but his muscular build and pull-oriented approach suggest that he won’t need the warm Adelanto air to keep launching balls over the wall. Since 2008, Chavez has maintained relatively robust batting averages and walk rates despite his aggressive approach, but runs into problems—literally—after getting on base: when nine of your 15 steal attempts end in an “out” call, it’s probably time to stop going. His speed isn’t any better in the field, where he’ll likely be limited to left, but he might just have the bat for the job.
2010 This big Venezuelan profiles as a classic, power-hitting right fielder. He’s not much in the field, but that doesn’t matter given his bat. Last year, he had a breakout season while repeating A-ball as a 20-year-old, giving us a good idea of what his skills might look like in full bloom. He has a bit of speed, draws just enough walks, and strikes out a lot, but will hit for a respectable average with a lot of power. He’s still young and raw and will start out in High-A this year. Having been flipped to Seattle in the Brandon Morrow trade, he gives the Mariners a legitimate middle-of-the-order prospect.
2008 Venezuelan teenager Yohermyn Chavez is a raw outfielder with tremendous power and a right-field arm, but his bat will have to be his ticket to the big leagues
