2010 Acquired from Arizona in the disappointing Adam Dunn trade, Wilkin Castillo is a catcher who can play the infield but can’t hit. A torn labrum brought his 2009 season to an early close; the Reds dropped him from the 40-man in November, but re-signed him to a minor-league deal.
2009 Few are born with the mark of the third catcher: the skill to don the tools of ignorance and use them well, combined with the flexibility to play around the infield, the sagacity stand in the outfield without looking lost, and even a half-teaspoonful of speed thrown in for good measure. Sadly for Banileño Wilkin Castillo, the mark carries with it an awful curse—a lack of pop or patience that condemns the bearer to watch the starters at all the positions he can play from the bench, but never join them.
2008 The Snakes are grooming Wilkin Castillo to be something like the newer, better version of Eli Marrero or Robby Hammock; he catches most of the time, but can also play second, third, and short.
