2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Since last July, Carpenter has been employed by four organizations, finally landing with Atlanta after the Braves claimed him off of waivers from Boston at the end of November. Such is the life of a replacement-level relief pitcher. Carpenter shined for the Astros in the second half of 2011, but a propensity for putting runners on base soured his sophomore effort, a year in which he was one of only five pitchers to throw at least 30 innings with an earned-run average north of eight.
2012 When a player is traded for Pedro Feliz, how much can an organization really expect from him, anyway? Happily for the Astros, Carpenter is a converted catcher who looks like a major-league relief pitcher. He tops 95 mph on occasion and keeps things simple with a tried-and-true fastball-slider combination. He will have to reduce his OBP allowed from .372 to keep getting chances, but his minor-league WHIPs have been good, and considering Carpenter hadn't pitched in a full-season league until 2009, there's much more room for growth than most relievers his age.
2011 David Carpenter was acquired from the Cardinals last August in a trade for Pedro Feliz and has more upside than most 25-year-old relievers who have yet to pitch above A-ball. He didn't begin pitching until 2008, after starting his professional career as a catcher.
