2012 The Yankees brought canonical journeyman Buddy Carlyle back from Japan and called him up not once but twice because Our Book of the Blessed Steinbrenner says that you should try every possible oldster option before turning to a kid. He was released in August.
2010 The Braves gave Carlyle a chance in 2007 when few others were interested, and he was a serviceable starter in 2007, and then a serviceable reliever in 2008. He wasn't especially good as much as he was better than the other options available, but teams need those catch-me-when-I-fall guys too. Always a pitcher who depended more on guile than pure stuff, Carlyle was diagnosed with diabetes in May, lost a ton of weight, and he was just never the same, having lost a few ticks of velocity and even more movement. Taken off the roster at the end of the season, Carlye will be looking for a job again. The best he can hope for is probably a spring training invite.
2009 Carlyle’s injury that cost him most of May was a sprained neck resulting from a collision with a runner on the first-base line. A starter for most of his 12-year journeyman career (eight organizations in two hemispheres), Carlyle was used exclusively in relief after his mid-April promotion and responded with his best major league season. Still, it’s an indication of his value that, even in his best year, 37 of his 45 appearances came with the Braves either losing or winning by more than four runs.
2008 When the Braves' placed Carlyle in the rotation in June, it went well for a while: six quality starts in nine, with a 3.00 K/BB in 55 innings. After that, it was ugly: 39 runs in 45 innings over ten starts, with a .603 opposition SLG. He's a strike-throwing swingman who needs a big outfield patrolled by young legs just to survive.

2011-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Steve- What the you know what are the Yankees doing with Noesi? In a game where you have a starter only go 5 innings wouldn't that be a game where you give Noesi a shot at multiple innings? The better question is why is he not in Scranton starting. To me the only spot in a pen that should be occupied by a journeyman in the long man spot (Gordon seems to well suited for this). The constant infusion of one tomato can after another (Carlyle, Sanit, Marquez, Mitre, Pendleton and ever Gordon to a lesser degree) points to serious roster/organizational management issues.
(psk from scottsdale)
I just wrote about this in passing at the PB today. I actually don't mind that they have Noesi on the roster getting some major-league experience, but you're right, they have passed him up for longer relief appearances and spot starts and that makes zero sense. And the embrace of the guys you list over the options in their own system is pathological. As long as George Steinbrenner was alive, I understood that part of the psychosis at work in the organization were that pitchers trained in another organization were ALWAYS better than the ones the Yankees developed themselves. George is gone, but that particular bit of insanity lives on. You can probably throw in the fact that when we someday write the book on Brian Cashman's career, we will find that he was one of the worst GMs in baseball at knowing what to do with his 24th and 25th spots on the roster. To him that's free parking and it doesn't matter who you put there. Why not Buddy Carlyle? Why not Clay Bellinger? (Steven Goldman)
