2011 A 2007 supplemental first-rounder out of Tampa's Hillsborough High—the school that gave us Gary Sheffield and Doc Gooden, Elijah Dukes and Carl Everett—Burgess has been moving slowly enough to earn a Heinz endorsement ever since. The squat right fielder has the strong arm for the slot, but the fear is that he can add weight too easily and might lose his ability to cover ground. The big hope for him has long been that his power would develop, and his season-ending tasting course at Double-A offers the possibility that Burgess is about to pick the pace. Unfortunately, good breaking stuff still ties Burgess up, so a batting average sufficient to boost him into the big-league picture remains in the planning stages.
2010 Burgess is a prototypical right fielder with a cannon arm and prodigious raw power, but his all-or-nothing approach at the plate leads to inconsistent production and low batting averages that aren’t quite compensated for by his solid walk rate, and he loses a lot of his sock while facing lefties (.230 ISO vs. RHPs, .080 vs. LHPs). He's young, and already scheduled this year to enroll in Double-A, baseball’s classic weeder class, but Burgess will need to make more consistent contact if he wants to graduate to the productive big-league career that his tools will support.
2009 If we were to run a translation without any adjustments for difficulty, and only adjusted the stats for the offensive levels of the league, then Burgess would get credit for 32 home runs last year, one of only three 19-year-olds (Braves' Cody Johnson, Royals' Mike Moustakas) to reach 30. That's not his only tool—he has a cannon for an arm, and led all professionals in 2008 with 26 assists from right field. A supplemental first-rounder from 2007, he does have his flaws—he's kind of slow, poor range, too many strikeouts—and he probably won't be able to get much bigger without also becoming a lot slower.
2008 Burgess had as much power as anybody in the 2007 draft, but some wondered if he had enough pure hitting skills to tap into it. Stop wondering. Burgess' pro debut was an eye opener, as he showed a solid approach while leading the Gulf Coast League in OBP and slugging before moving up to the New York-Penn League, where he barely missed a step. He's a stud, and many teams are going to regret passing on him.
