BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 In his first two outings of 2011, Jason Bulger came into extra-inning games as Mike Scioscia's last non-emergency option, and walked four batters both times. From there it was only a matter of time before he pitched his way out of the organization, live arm or no.
2011 A montage of snapshots from Bulger’s career might best be set to the Eagles’ “Wasted Time.” For a variety of reasons, certain prospects are forced to toil in the minors long after they’ve shown that they have little left to prove there, watching as their limited windows of opportunity close. For pitchers, whose ability to perform at a high level can disappear in an instant, those years in purgatory are even more poignant. It took a 0.63 ERA in 2008, his fourth Triple-A season, to earn a then-30-year-old Bulger the extended major-league audition for which he’d been waiting. The righty didn’t disappoint in 2009, posting a 3.00 FRA in over 65 innings, but his successful campaign ended on an ominous note, as shoulder soreness nearly rendered him unavailable for the playoffs. Last season, the problem reccurred, limiting him to three appearances after mid-June. He managed to maintain his strikeout rate when available, but surrendered some control and velocity, which he failed to recover after a long mid-season layoff. His ERA would have looked much better sans a disastrous third of an inning in his first outing back, but even so, he wasn’t the pitcher that Mike Scioscia had gradually come to trust.
2010 Eight years after being the Diamondbacks' first-round pick, Bulger finally made good at the major-league level, helping the Angels' bullpen pick up the slack for the injured and/or ineffective Scot Shields and Jose Arredondo. Bulger's always been able to pump his fastball in the mid-90s, but a newfound consistency throwing strikes with his breaking balls worked him into Scioscia's good graces. Bombed for a 12.13 Fair Run Average in low-leverage duty in April, he yielded just a 1.78 FRA and 5.4 hits per nine the rest of the way. His leverage score climbed each month, and he finished with the staff's lowest line-drive rate (11.7 percent). Such dominance insures that he'll be in the mix for important innings in 2010.
2009 Take Arredondo and subtract movement and command, and you've get Bulger. In the last three years at Triple-A, he's recorded 200 strikeouts in 129 2/3 innings thanks to easy mid-90s heat, but his marginal curveball and too many pitches out of the strike zone get him in constant trouble at the big-league level. His velocity is enough for him to last another five years as an up-and-down type, but it remains to be seen if he'll ever really stick.
2008 The longer Bulger stays at Triple-A, the better he looks, with steadily improving strikeout rates and K/BB numbers. He has allowed seven homers in three Pacific Coast League seasons, and one in 18 major league innings against 18 strikeouts. It's probably time to find out for sure if he's a major league pitcher. Like Heath Bell or Al Reyes, Bulger just needs an opportunity, one he's not going to get in this organization.
2007 Jason Bulger was the unique talent the Halos acquired from Arizona to get Alberto Callaspo out of their hair simply because they seemed to have too many middle infielders; Bulger got designated for assignment after only a year in the organization.
2006 Like most D-Backs pitchers, Bulger has a walk problem. He`s been seeing a lot of action as a closer since his High-A days, but his peripherals don`t really suggest he`s got that special something to get The Three Most Magicalest Outs to get that Most Wonderfullest of Stats: a save.
