BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2010 For a guy who had already aged his way into organizational depth territory, Matt Brown's stock fell even further last year; not helping matters, his glove has never been anything special. Any shot at a big-league career involves a change of scenery.
2009 Brown is your classic minor league performer. He's put up decent numbers at every level while playing every position but catcher and center field, but now that he's in his late 20s, he's limited to the two corner infield spots and he's been overmatched in a pair of very brief call-ups. He might get to make a few more cameos, but it's looking like playing on the 2008 Olympic Squad is going to be his career highlight.
2008 The need to move Brandon Wood off of shortstop last year sent Brown, who had been playing to Wood's right on their way up the ladder and isn't a terrible third baseman, all around the field. As a result, Brown played first, second, and the outfield corners for Triple-A Salt Lake while turning in his typical offensive performance. He's loosely comparable to Robb Quinlan, whose job he could take as soon as midsummer.
2007 Brown is a solidly unspectacular third base type--he can play third well enough, but not so well he`ll wow people, and his hitting is similarly adequate. His likely future is as a trade throw-in; between Aybar and Wood, it would take a very strange combination of events for him to wind up threatening anyone beyond Robb Quinlan. He was added to the 40-man roster as a ripple effect of the additional year of protection teams acquired for their prospects in the new CBA.
