YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 An athletic catcher with a smooth swing and excellent contact-hitting skills, Brantly came over from the Tigers in the Anibal Sanchez deal and took over the everyday catching responsibilities in short order. Brantly's mature approach, both in the batterís box and in the squat, impressed the Marlins during his three-month stint last year, and he figures to remain the teamís primary backstop this season, ahead of newly acquired Jeff Mathis. Brantlyís home-run ceiling lies somewhere in the low teens, but his polish may help him push Jacob Realmuto to be the teamís catcher of the future. In the worst-case scenario, he'll give the Marlins one of the best overall backups in the league, or a fine trading chip.

2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat)Cory, thanks for the chat. In a deep two catcher league. Keeping Mauer, but have to go cheap at #2 catcher. Any suggestions for end game catchers? Thinking about guys in that Mesoraco, Federowicz, Clevenger, etc. tier.
(LoyalRoyal from Spring Break)
Wellington Castillo of the Cubs. Should play a lot, has power, and is in his age-26 season so his time is now. I'm also big on Rob Brantly of the Marlins but his value upside is lower since he lacks any single big skill, from a fantasy standpoint. (Cory Schwartz)
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat)Can Saltalamacchia raise his OBP this year? Would you rather have Rob Brantley?
(Guy from TX)
It's hard to see a big leap in Jarrod Saltalamacchia's OBP given his incredibly high strikeout percentages. I'd still take Salty over Rob Brantly. We know what we'll get with Salty. Brantly - who I do like long-term - seems like a complete unknown. (Mike Gianella)
2012-11-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Does Rob Brantly have both the bat and the necessary tools of ignorance to make it as an everyday major league catcher?
(Paul from DC)
Brantly is an average defensive catcher with above-average plate skills and an advanced approach. He had that in college and has cleaned up some of the defensive weaknesses to get where he is in Miami. He's capable of starting 110-120 games a year and helping the Marlins immediately. For the record, I don't believe there are many catchers that should start more than 120 or so games behind the dish. Brantly's bat could warrant some time at DH in road interleague play. (Jason A. Churchill)
