YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Brach already has done more than most 42nd-round picks do. He soaked up low-leverage innings as a rookie, getting plenty of strikeouts in the process thanks to a deceptive delivery that makes his low-90s fastball look harder than it is. The excellent control he exhibited in the minors hasn't translated to the big leagues, where hitters spit at pitches out of the zone rather than chase them. Brach gives up a lot of fly balls, which makes him susceptible to occasional bouts of gopheritis, even in the most forgiving of environments. He is a decent middle-relief option whose gaudy strikeout totals may fool some into believing he is more than that.
2012 The Padres have had good fortune with their 42nd-round picks in recent years, with Kyle Blanks in 2004 and Brach in 2008. Brach is a big right-hander with a funky delivery who has racked up strikeouts (11.4 K/9, 7.3 K/BB) in 206 minor-league appearances despite average stuff. He works around the plate, and his fly-ball tendencies won't hurt him at Petco Park. Brach could soak up middle relief innings in 2012 or become trade bait for a team that miscalculates park effects and/or the fungibility of relievers.
