BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2012 Signed to a minor-league contract in July after being dropped by the Mets, Blaine Boyer was not a hit in Memphis, allowing 26 runs in just four starts before being released in August.
2011 For $725,000, Blaine Boyer is a cost-effective reliever. Anything more, and his salary would outweigh his contributions, which is why the Diamondbacks chose to non-tender him in December. He throws hard and generates a ton of grounders, but struggles to control his sinker.
2010 After two injury-shortened seasons and a 2008 in which he started hot but ran out of fuel, last year Boyer bounced between the Braves and Cards before ending up a member of the Diamondbacks. His 2.68 ERA in 37 innings as a Snake is misleading and the result of a suspiciously nonexistent HR/FB ratio. While he will undoubtedly serve up some gopher balls next season, his strikeout and walk numbers should also return to previously established levels, making Boyer a cost-effective reliever, though not someone to which a team should commit more than nominal resources given the abundant supply of similar, freely available bullpen arms.
2009 Speaking of heavy workloads, Boyer lost most of 2006 to shoulder surgery and struggled with his control in 2007. He emerged as the Bravesí eighth-inning guy in the first half of 2008, but having thrown 44 2/3 innings by the end of June (including appearances in both games of a doubleheader in late May), he fell apart when the calendar flipped to July. He pitched in just two Braves wins in August (one of which saw him surrender four runs in less than an inning) and gave up eight runs in just 3 1/3 innings of work in September. The good news is that his control was never the issue; he simply got smacked around. Given the winter to rest, he could be an asset in a more balanced bullpen this year, as he held opposing batters to a .228/.293/.377 line during those first three months.
2008 Though he still throws hard, Blaine Boyer's return from shoulder problems was marred by disastrous control.
2007 Blaine Boyer had a diagnostic arthroscopy on his right shoulder in April and never made it back to the Braves in 2006. The pen could use his sinker/curve mix.
2006 A Marietta product who`s spent most of his six minor-league seasons as a starter, it wasn`t until last summer that he broke out of the low minors. After getting knocked around at Double-A, he was transferred to relief. By mid-June he was in the Braves` bullpen and was largely effective; twice he went four weeks between allowing a run. He held righty batters to a .200/.277/.278 clip, but his control suffered against lefties. With a pair of plus pitches--his curve and his sinker--he`ll probably stay in the bullpen.
2005 Another suburban-Atlanta draftee, Boyer, the 100th pick of the 2000 draft, has worked as a starter the last two seasons, but he's stretched in the role. His lack of strong off-speed stuff will probably force him back to the bullpen, but as a reliever he has loads of potential. His fastball sits at 95, and his hammer curve is a plus offering. If the Braves do the right thing and deploy him as a reliever, look out.
