2008 A bum hip and a sports hernia cut into what was an otherwise triumphant return engagement in the majors for Bowie, who proved to be a relatively rare sort of utility pitcher by transforming from LOOGY into rotation regular for six weeks. The Nats put him in the disposable pile, and he signed a minor league deal with the Rockies. Already something of a soft-tosser, moving to Coors Field isn't going to help him, as his line-drive rates were pretty scary last year; if you enjoyed the ride, now would be a good time to get off.
2007 Proof that anybody can come back, Bowie is one of a generation`s worth of Brave pitching prospect flops and threw less than 40 innings from 2003 to 2005. After missing all of 2004, Bowie worked his way back through the Nationals` system over the last two seasons to earn a shot as a lefty reliever. He doesn`t throw anything in particular that might floor you, but strikes are good, and he`s already shown some moxie by trying to get back into things, even if he did finish the year on the DL once again.
2003 Veteran lefty who can fill in out of the pen or the rotation. Heís got a shot to end up with a career as a situational lefty, but itíd have to be with the right organization. Nothing to distinguish him from several dozen other identical talents.
2001 He was touted as a key player in the Terry Mulholland/Jose Hernandez trade, but Micah Bowie was the third-best pitcher in the package, after the 2001 contenders for the fifth starterís job (Joey Nation and Ruben Quevedo). He's a nibbler who throws in the high 80s, with a curve that merely tumbles and an adequate change-up. Bowie was cut loose over the winter.
2000 The Cubs oversold what he could do because they expected too much, but he was not the key player in the Hernandez trade with the Braves. Bowie rattled off four quality starts in his first six at Richmond before suffering a strained elbow that hampered him for the rest of the year. He's had problems with the elbow before, so itís an issue. There are plenty of left-handed pitchers who throw in the high 80s with a nice change-up. Bowie's key pitch is his curve: if he's healthy, it's supposed to cut instead of tumble. He'll have to fight to win the fifth spot in the rotation.
1999 Bowie had made steady progress through the system, pitching well but never bowling anyone over until last year. He developed a changeup while pitching in Australia last winter, and came back a new man. He was especially hot during second half, allowing just one run over a 41-inning stretch. Heís already had an injury setback, but rehabbed an elbow ligament tear without surgery. He needs to be handled with care, but heís a fine prospect. While the Braves donít really need him, as a lefty he should have no problem finding an organization who does.
