YearComment
2009 American League hitters were itching for another crack at Borowski following his "Matrix"-esque performance in 2007, and they soon found that his ability to duck bullets had vaporized. In his first four innings Borowski gave up eight runs and three homers, twice turning Cleveland ninth-inning leads into losses. After the second of those debacles, Borowski shuffled to the DL with a triceps strain. He threw a little harder upon returning, but the Indians finally told him to hit the bricks after he blew another game on July 1. The realization that lightning traveling as slow as Borowksi's heater never strikes twice would have saved the Tribe two wins, by conservative estimation, and perhaps altered the season's trajectory. Borowski finished his Cleveland career with 51 saves in 63 chances despite a 5.79 RA, which says all there is to say about how overrated the ability to get the game's last three outs is.
2008 As weird as it is that Joe Borowski somehow held onto the closer job all of last year despite posting an ERA over 5.00, it's even weirder that Indians brought him back to close again this year. Here at BP, we often have internal arguments over the concept of "closer mentality," with some of us believing that a certain mindset is required to succeed in the role, and others believing that if a pitcher can get it done in the seventh or eighth inning, he can get it done in the ninth. If the former group represents the conservative point of view in this debate, Eric Wedge would seem to be to the right of Reagan, quite possibly to the detriment of his team.
2007 For a guy who flunked out of Tampa, Borowski had himself a pretty good year in Miami, and on the cheap. His strikeout rate came back despite underwhelming stuff, and he led the staff in WXRL. He also reportedly failed an offseason physical with the Phillies before signing with the Indians, so it`s possible that the Marlins got the last of Borowski. At first glance, his walk rate seems to have taken a serious turn for the worse in 2006, but Joe Girardi had him issue a career-high seven intentional walks.
2006 With an injury history longer than Wagner`s Ring Cycle, Borowski has established himself as one of the most consistent non-pitching pitchers in the game. After a wrist injury kept him shelved through late May, he pitched poorly and was released by the Cubs. He was a new man upon signing with the Rays, pitching 21 innings before allowing a run. Thereafter, he went back to being hammered. Signed to a one-year deal by the Marlins, he`ll be given a chance to win the closer`s job. His strikeout rates have declined in three straight seasons, giving credence to suggestions that the injuries have diminished his fastball.
2005 Joe Borowski wasn't Jim Morris, but his 2003 was the stuff that bad Dennis Quaid movies are made of: Minor league Average Joe turned ace closer for the playoff-bound Cubs. Unfortunately, based on his 2004 performance, the movie that Borowski's career would seem to have the most in common with is Awakenings. From the very start of the season, Borowski's fastball was darting wildly out of the strike zone whenever he attempted to throw more than about 86 miles per hour; he quickly accumulated two blown saves and four losses for the Cubs before being diagnosed with a rotator cuff tear. There was no particular reason to have seen this coming, and there is no particular way to know just how well he is going to recover. Did not have his velocity back during a late-season rehab stint in Iowa.
2003 You can always scare up a perfectly good reliever out of the bushes and pay him next to nothing. The Angelsí pen was built on this, the Braves dragged Hammond and Holmes out of their fresh graves, and the Cubs hauled in Borowski. Heís a true middleman, durable and throwing strikes, and he can be handed leads or tight situations. Sort of like Dave Weathers or Bob Wells, heís had years where heís gotten a lot of experience throwing from the stretch, so heís familiar with coping with runners on base. Alfonseca, Veres, and Remlinger will handle the 8th and 9th innings, but Borowski should still own the 6th and 7th.
1996  Acquired in the Kent Mercker trade. Borowski has played second fiddle to Armando Benitez among the Orioles' minor league relievers, but he's a fine pitcher in his own right. His control has improved tremendously the last two seasons, but the Braves aren't exactly in desperate need of pitching at the moment, so he'll probably head back to AAA for more seasoning.

DateQuestionAnswer
2008-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will, Joe Borowski has just been disabled with a 'right triceps strain'. Is that the problem, or is there perhaps more? Maybe less? What are the chances he's thrown his last pitch in the majors?
(Jason from Columbus)
Cleveland tends to be very precise with information. I couldn't even venture a guess as to this being the end. (Will Carroll)
