BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2014 Due to publishing agreements, the 2014 player comments and team essays are only available in the Baseball Prospectus 2014 book (available in hardcopy, e-book, and Kindle).
2013 Bonifacio spent most of the 2012 season on the disabled list, missing a combined 98 games due to thumb surgery and a sprained knee. After roving around six different positions for the Marlins in 2011, he settled in center field last year, but the trade to Toronto is likely to result in a return to super-sub duty. Bonifacio's offensive game revolves around his excellent speed—which has fueled an 80 percent success rate on stolen-base attempts—but his bloated strikeout rate eats into his on-base percentage and robs him of opportunities to use those wheels. His versatility and speed should make him an asset as long as he can stay on the field.
2012 Not projected as an everyday player entering the year, Bonifacio took advantage of opportunities created by others' injuries and ineffectiveness to collect 641 plate appearances, second behind Gaby Sanchez for the team lead and easily Bonifacio's career high. Though he posted one of the Marlins' worst FRAA totals, the majority of his negative defensive value was earned while playing shortstop, where his level of ineptitude actually marked an upgrade over what Hanley Ramirez offered in between stays on the disabled list. With Ramirez sliding over to third base to make room for Jose Reyes, Bonifacio once again enters the year without a clear path to regular at-bats.
2011 After making the big mistake of employing Bonifacio as an everyday player in 2009, the Marlins kicked him back onto the Big Easy shuttle and into utility work last season. Even so, it might seem as if Florida exceeded its recommended daily allowance of vitamin Bonifacio, but keep in mind that 20 of his 37 big-league starts came in September, after the Marlins were already out of it. As choices for the last man on a bench go, you could do worse; he can plausibly play six different positions and has value as a pinch-runner and early-inning pinch-hitter. He'd fit right in were he to get in the Wayback Machine and take the place of Matt Alexander or Larry Lintz.
2010 You know the Silver Sluggers, the annual award given to the best hitter at each position? No, Bonifacio didn’t get one of those, but if there were an Iron Oxide award—that is, a Rusty Slugger—Bonifacio would have taken the prize for third basemen, having been the worst hitter in the majors (as per VORP) to play regularly at the position. He was badly miscast at both a run-producing position and as a leadoff man; it’s a problem when your leadoff hitter bats .218/.284/.275 against right-handers. Heck, it’s a problem when your number eight hitter does it. Bonifacio did finally lose the leadoff job with the arrival of Chris Coghlan, and his playing time disappeared when the acquisition of Nick Johnson pushed Jorge Cantu to third base. He received just 66 plate appearances over the rest of the season, spotting at short or center and pinch-running. He should have some value continuing in the role of a speedy 25th man—assuming the Marlins don’t again decide to cripple their offense by overrating a minor talent; they averaged 4.5 runs a game with Bonifacio leading off, 4.9 with Coghlan at the top, and that adds up fast.
2009 Bonifacio was acquired from Arizona straight up for Jon Rauch, and subsequently dealt to the Marlins in the Willingham trade. Why would they have wanted to pursue him in the first place is a good question; yes, having him around gave them an excuse to let Felipe Lopez walk, but that's an improvement in the clubhouse, not on the field. We'll give Bonafacio points for speed, and for being a better defender than the Nationals' alternatives, but in the end he's nothing more than the real-world picture of a replacement-level second baseman. The Marlins may use him to push Dan Uggla towards third base or as an outright replacement if they trade him. Even with Uggla's shaky defense, it will be a big step down.
2008 Even though he didn't hit in the California League or at Double-A, it's too early to write off Bonafacio. Gifted with blazing speed and a certain brio, he's what some might call a gamer, but despite the slappy-speed-guy profile, the bat doesn't get knocked out of his hands in tight spots. His upside is something in the Tony Womack/Miguel Cairo range. His glovework at second is better than those two, but he's not able to handle shortstop as a regular.
2007 Emilio Bonifacio is a fast slap hitter who doesn`t walk much, and didn`t do much of anything away from Lancaster.

BP Chats

DateQuestionAnswer
2013-03-06 20:00:00 (link to chat)Any sleeper 2B for an auction draft this year?
(Cal Guy from Cal)
I still like Emilio Bonifacio, Gordan Beckham, and depending on how deep, Jemile Weeks. (Paul Singman)
2012-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is going on with Wil Myers? He seemingly went from a walk and contact / high OBP approach to a high K rate slugger? Any murmurings about a change in approach?
(ChaCha from Kansas City)
Speaking of Kevin, I just asked him about this. His answer: "More walks isn't always a good thing, fewer isn't always a bad thing. He needed a little more see ball/hit ball mentality." So now you're reading KG even if you didn't click on that link earlier.

Speaking of more walks not necessarily being a good thing: How about Emilio Bonifacio? Bonifacio is hitting second in the Marlins' order this season, and to his credit, he's seeing more pitches and walking more often. He also still hasn't had an extra-base hit. As in, a .000 ISO, after 135 PA, and his BABIP is down. You know what they say about correlation and causation, but maybe Bonifacio is better when he's up there hacking. Even patient hitters don't go to the plate trying to walk. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-05-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Any thoughts on Emilio Bonifacio's amazing non-slugging ways? OBP of nearly .350, ISO of .000. Hoping to get Miller to do some sort of historical perspective on that feat. Also raises some interesting questions on pitchers abilities to adjust to hitters' approaches.
(Gene from Kansas City)
I swear this question was just submitted, and that I'm not actually stealing interesting observations from the people asking questions. Sam will see this, and maybe he'll do something on it. I was thinking of doing something myself. (Ben Lindbergh)
2012-02-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)I think the hype in Miami is based on smoke and mirrors. I think (lack of) discipline kills the Fish this year. Opinion?
(chiefsalsa from Utah)
I don't think the fans are going to show up in droves the way Loria and Samson think they will after being abused for years by the team. I think that their shortcomings in getting on-base won't help their cause, but if Jose Reyes is right, and if Emilio Bonifacio can build on a very solid 2011, that's less of a problem than before. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)Although not nearly the defeneder Emilio Bonifacio is at 2B, wouldn't the Marlins be best suited putting Chris Coghlan at 2B should they deal Dan Uggla based on the value of his bat in the infield?
(Goose from Chicago)
Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-09-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Maybin? Reaches full potential next year?
(Tim from NYC)
I think so, and I really don't get why the Marlins waited around on him while indulging Emilio Bonifacio's insufferable outiness. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-08-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)The post Nick Johnnson playoff bump for the Marlins is interesting... but does it go down the same degree if/when he gets hurt again?
(strupp from Madison)
Only if they go back to Emilio Bonifacio as an everyday player, but at this rate, he's about to become his own entry into a latter-day edition of Mackay's classic, "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds." (Christina Kahrl)
2009-04-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)I laughed when I saw CBSSports' player update that Emilio Bonifacio is currently the "front runner for the NL MVP." Seriously though -- what are the chances Bonifacio keeps hitting at a productive clip all season?
(mikeduin from Seattle)
Asymptotically approaching zero. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-07-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Orlando Hudson will re-sign? If not, would Emilio Bonifacio be likely to take over?
(temple from Madison Wisconsin)
The only grumblings I heard about the O-dog were in the offseason, and the consensus was that him re-signing was going to be dicey. But his defense is so valuable to that team, that I think that they'll make a good faith effort to re-sign him. If not, I don't think Bonifacio necessarily takes over. I'm somewhat underwhelmed by his numbers at Tucson (.302/.348/.387) - his BABIP there is .364. Some of that comes from his speed, but he's also been lucky from an average standpoint. With no power to speak of, almost all of his value offensively derives from his speed. (Jeff Erickson)
