DateQuestionAnswer
2013-03-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)thanks for the chat, do you think this is the year Carlos Santana breaks out and becomes the top catcher in baseball?
(James from Portland)
Thanks for being a part of it, James. Your fine city needs to open its library on Mondays. Then again, Powell's makes up for a lot. As for Santana, I don't see him overtaking Buster Posey, but he's still a stud... much more useful to the Indians than Casey Blake, anyway. (Geoff Young)
2011-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Mike, really enjoy your stuff here and on MSTI. Has there been anything in the off-season or early spring training that inspires any confidence in Donnie Baseball's managing ability?
(cjslawyer from The Insurance Capital of the World)
Thanks. It's really hard to judge Mattingly when he's still yet to manage a single real game, but so far I think he's been impressive off the field. He's 20+ years younger than Joe Torre and reportedly much better equipped to relate to the younger players, and he decided on the Opening Day starter and the batting order very early in camp, rather than letting it linger like Torre did.

We'll have to see how it goes when the games start (I know everyone likes to bash his 'two mound visits' fiasco, but that's hardly fair). If anything worries me so far, it's that he says he wants to bat Casey Blake 2nd because he can bunt, which is problematic for any number of reasons, not the least of which is that Blake injured himself on a bunt last week. (Mike Petriello)
2010-06-07 18:30:00 (link to chat)Hi Kevin, thanks for doing this. With Casey Blake getting up there in years and no real 3b prospects in the Dodgers organization, any chance they take a college 3rdbaseman?
(MatternK from Oxnard, CA)
In the first? Maybe. Jedd Gyorko is a possibility, but not a probability. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-02-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)What are the chances of Blake DeWitt winning the 2b job in LA, or he's doomed to back up Belliard as well as Casey Blake at 3rd?
(Aly Walk With Me from Auburn, CA)
Belliard is 35 years old and has been Belliard-esque for quite some time. One would think DeWitt is the guy the Dodgers want to win that position battle. (David Laurila)
2010-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Dodgers' infield bats seem pretty mediocre going into Spring Training. Do we have any reason to be optimistic? Or should I figure they'll be flashing great leather (will they?) and that makes it a good tradeoff?
(Karl B from Philly)
OK, here's the glass half full scenarios:

James Loney will rebound from a couple of lousy years because his extreme L/R and Home/Road splits have been flukes.

• Blake DeWitt will claim the 2B job with a hot spring, and get by well enough, particularly with Jamie Carroll as his late-inning defensive caddy.

• Another year removed from back surgery, Rafael Furcal will be in good enough shape to flash his near-MVP form.

• Casey Blake hitting in the NL is just one more cue as to how wide the disparity is between leagues.

I don't believe all of those, and I don't know how many of them I actually do believe, but there's your rose-tinted-glasses scenario. At the very least, yes, they should be good defensively, though 2B is a concern. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-01-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Top ten GMs I can't think of ten amazing GMs out there at the moment. Shapiro has made some great moves, some ok moves, and then some horrible moves. Colon move - awesome Lee trade - not so much Casey Blake trade - highway robbery Matt Lawton - very bad Trade for Asdrubal Cabrera - a steal. Hafner deal - bad even if his shoulder didn't take a dive.
(SaberTJ from Cleveland, OH)
So here's one yes on Shapiro. (Marc Normandin)
2010-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is there a player that you favor because of his beard? A favorite bearded player perhaps?
(enosarris from Teaneck)
I like the look of Casey Blake, cause he really looks like he could eat a lot of pancakes, if you know what I mean. (Tommy Bennett)
2009-10-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)I had the Cards going to the WS, I was very surprised with the sweep. I thought Torre did a great job of keeping Pujols from being a factor with the IBBs in the early games. TLR seemed unwilling to do the same with Manny. Another surprise is how poorly the umpires have been, I don't think I remember so many blown calls in the field.
(tonipeluso from Oakland, CA)
I did as well, but credit to the entire Dodgers lineup. Good pitching usually beats good hitting, but two of the best pitchers in the NL took losses to a Dodgers lineup that's showing it's a lot more than just Manny. Take a look at Casey Blake's WARP. (Will Carroll)
2009-06-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Well, last season we identified Jon Meloan and Carlos Santana. The difference between Mark DeRosa and Casey Blake is within an epsilon band, no? (If it would help, my guess is that the Indians would again pay DeRosa's salary for a better prospect as they did in that deal.)
(buffum from Austin TX)
Ah, Ned Colletti. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm sort of surprised that there isn't more media coverage of the Dodgers dominance over the past eight games - they are WHIPPING teams and aren't really firing on all cylinders yet. This is the best 1-8 in the NL and Billingsley and Kershaw have been lights out, Broxton has been unhittable; assuming Kuroda comes back strong, they have a solid rotation and depth in McDonald. Thoughts?
(Silv from NY, NY)
They're on my list for this week. My standard line on them has been that I don't think much of Casey Blake, but if he's your eighth-best hitter, you have a lineup. The pitching depth worries me--not a Randy Wolf fan, the back of the bullpen is shaky--but from 1-17 or so, it's a heck of a roster. Best team in that division, especially given the Diamondbacks' problems developing those bats. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-02-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Joe-thanks for the chat. Are the Dodgers better off signing Dunn, Hudson and Wolf vs. Manny and Wolf?
(raygu1 from princeton, nj)
Why are they signing Randy Wolf? Why, in fact, do I have so many references to Randy Wolf in my queue? He's a flyball pitcher without the stuff to pull that off, a 6.24 ERA waiting to happen.

The Dodgers have jammed up their roster in a way that makes it hard for them to sign players. Too many roster spots and too much money being wasted on Juan Pierre and Casey Blake and Jason Schmidt. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-11-03 13:30:00 (link to chat)What kind of deal does Casey Blake get on the open market? I could accept him back in a Tribe uniform on a 1-year deal, but I expect someone will give him 3, and I don't want that team to be Cleveland. In the absence of Blake, who plays 3B for the Indians in 2009?
(buffum from Austin TX)
Hi Steve... it's a good question, but I'd think a reunion with the Tribe makes sense now that Marte's pancaked with an enthusiasm that only Mrs. Butterworth would appreciate. Two plus an option is probably more palatable than anything flavored "one," but maybe a one-plus option works. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-11-03 13:30:00 (link to chat)What can the Bucs expect in trade for Jack Wilson or Freddy Sanchez? Would LA deal for Hu for JW for example, or are we looking at AA/AAA prospects in a teams top 10 for each? And would it be better to wait until the trade deadline, or now, to deal these type players?
(Bucco Bob from Pitt, PA)
If Neal Huntington could get Hu for Wilson, that would be nothing short of superb for the Pirates. I really don't know how much of a market there is for Sanchez; whether you consider him a weak-hitting third baseman or a weak-fielding second baseman, he's really only a patch, and people might keep tripping over the batting title when it comes to expectations of his valuation. Can he be useful? Of course, sort of like Casey Blake as a patch at any of the four corners, and if you're in win-now mode. But that narrows the field of candidates considerably. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-07-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why don't the Mets just go out and get Casey Blake already?
(big baby from nj)
No kidding! Blake is much better than people give him credit for. (Marc Normandin)
2008-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Now that we got a nice haul for CC, who else can we get some prospects for?
(Miguel from Cleveland)
Obviously they'll be lesser deals, but I bet they find something at least decent for Paul Byrd and Casey Blake. Not exactly the Killer B's, but someone will pay. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-03-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Was "if Marte is for real" a serious comment?
(ericturner29 from Chicago)
Sort of. He had a weird spring--no BA, great everything else, which is somewhat consistent with his track record. I think at some point, he'll get another chance to win the 3B job, and he has more chance to impact a season than Casey Blake does. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)If Eric Wedge is impressed with Andy Marte (it Marte looks like he will be on the Opening Day roster), why not move Casey Blake to an OF corner and play Marte at 3B. Blake could replace the Dellucci/Michaels platoon and I think Marte could be better than that platoon, which makes the move an improvement for the Indians.
(BrettG from Worthington, OH)
Blake's a pretty brutal outfielder, and not an especially strong bat for an outfield corner, and Marte may not be a defensive improvement on Blake at the hot corner in the first place. The real question is whether or not Marte's going to recapture some fraction of his former promise, and I wouldn't necessarily bet on that. He simply isn't as good as all of us--prospect mavens, scouts, statheads, you name it--projected him to be. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-01-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)McPherson or Ensberg to 3rd, Casey Blake to right, Gutierrez, Michaels and Dellucci fight it out in left?
(jesmont from Virginia)
The scary thing about this proposition is that Blake would be the defensive replacement at third for either one of those guys. (Christina Kahrl)
