2013 Blackley and Balfour formed an intimidating tandem of Aussies in the Oakland bullpen—that is, when Blackley was not being called upon to fill in in the starting rotation. The left-hander was claimed off of waivers from the Giants in May, after which he admirably filled the swingman role for Melvin to plug-and-play as needed. Blackley's lack of a glaring platoon split kept him on the mound vs. left- and right-handed batters alike, effectively mixing a wide array of pitches to keep batters honest on both sides of the plate. Hitters had a difficult time identifying the southpaw's patterns of pitch selection, with Blackley calling upon each of five different pitches at least 14 percent of the time.
2010 Travis Blackley has bounced around four organizations in as many seasons, but he could serve as a lefty specialist if his modest fastball velocity returns.
2008 Two healthy seasons removed from shoulder surgery, Blackley isn't the same pitcher who owned the Texas League at age 20, as he lacks the dominant stuff that marked his rise. His moderate success caught the eye of the Phillies, who selected him in the Rule 5 draft. Given the wide-open back of Phils' rotation, Blackley has an opportunity to stick as the high-powered Philly offense just needs its pitchers to take the ball and survive five innings.
2007 Blackley is a lefty control guy from Down Under who missed 2005 due to shoulder surgery and hasn`t been the same since. Sent back down to San Antonio--a level he dominated three years ago--Blackley was able to hold his own. Rushed his first time up the ladder, he`ll now attempt to repeat the trip with greatly diminished stuff and lowered expectations for his future.
2006 Yet another victim of the Mariner pitching injury wheel of destruction. Blackley hurt his left shoulder in 2004, then had surgery in early `05 to repair two labrum tears. Like Ryan Anderson, Gil Meche, and so many other M`s pitching prospects before him, Blackley is assured of not reaching his full potential. Meche`s serviceable career as a back-end rotation guy is Blackley`s upside. Given historical results of pitchers with labrum tears, a complete Anderson-like washout is a real possibility.
2005 Blackley is a handsome, charming guy who really pours on the Australian accent when it's time to talk to the ladies. He got worked over in his starts with the big team, with lousy control and nine home runs allowed in six starts. Then he was sent down and a "tender shoulder" shut him down for the season. Not a good sign.

2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat)Oakland has apparently traded Travis Blackley to Houston for OF Jake Goebbert. Thoughts? Goebbert seems to have some decent on-base chops, at least.
